12 answers to common climate excuses

The writer James Baldwin once said, “Not everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced.” As a society, it is time we face climate change head-on, but unfortunately, there are still many who deny climate change or would rather sweep the issue under the rug. Whether out of sincere disbelief, fear, or denial, it can be frustrating to interact with those who refuse to see the severity of climate change and the threat it poses to our world.

This week, we share with you 12 common excuses for climate inaction and how you can address them with rationality, rather than rage. Here is a glimpse of the first five:

1.) Isn’t it alarmist to talk about the extinction of the human race? Yes, it is concerning that we have already emitted enough carbon to cause 1.1 degrees Celsius of warming, but addressing the potential suffering of billions of people is not alarmist, it’s empathetic and realistic.

2.) Isn’t it too late to prevent catastrophe? Yes, much damage has already been done, but each fraction of a degree of warming exacerbates the issue and we owe it to future generations to soften the blow of climate change and prevent further disaster.

3.) How do we face something so depressing? It is depressing, but it is also exciting to have the potential to save our civilization. We are mobilizing as a planet against a critical danger and we have the potential to act together with inspiring strength and innovation.

4.) Won’t it be impossible to get off fossil fuels? Yes, the fossil fuel industry is powerful, but more than half the UK now runs off renewable power and the efficiency and affordability of renewables is growing by the day. Need more evidence? Check out any number of Optimist Daily articles on renewable energy such as this one about Google’s renewables acquisition or this UN report about the bright future of green energy.

5.) How do I make a difference as one person in a world of 7 billion? As we said already, every little bit makes a difference, and small daily decisions in defense of the environment can empower you to feel like a capable warrior in the fight against climate change.

Researchers take a big step forward to preventing chemo-induced hair loss

Drugs used as part of cancer treatment can sometimes be so strong that they may cause permanent hair loss in some cancer patients – whose body is not able to endure those drugs. And considering that we often see our hair as an important part of our identity, suddenly losing it due to cancer treatment can be a very distressing experience for both men and women.

Now researchers have gotten one step closer to preventing chemo-induced hair-loss from happening. More specifically, researchers from the University of Manchester have understood how taxanes – a powerful class of chemotherapy drugs commonly used to treat breast cancer and lung carcinoma – damage hair follicles. The researchers found that taxanes are especially ruinous not simply because they knock out existing hair follicles, as has been commonly held, but because they specifically target the dividing cells responsible for producing the hair itself. Therefore, it’s essential that those cells are most protected from undesired chemotherapy effects.

While scientists underscore that more work is desperately needed in this lamentably underfunded field of cancer medicine, the breakthrough paves the way for the development of new treatments that prevent chemotherapy-induced hair loss – arguably one of the most psychologically distressing side effects of modern cancer therapy.

No Longer Impossible

Home cooks can now prepare the Impossible Burger in their own kitchens

After wooing customers in restaurants with its world-famous meatless burger, last Friday Impossible Foods has finally hit the shelves of grocery stores.

Since the end of last week, home cooks have been able to buy the plant-based burger in 27 Gelson’s Markets stores in Southern California, where a 12-ounce package of the goodie goes for about $9 a pop.

The meat-less meat company claimed that it will bring the burger to more grocery stores – including some on the East Coast – later this month, and it plans to reach every region of the US by the middle of next year.

By moving its product into grocery stores, Impossible Foods is getting into even closer competition with Beyond Meat, which already sells its own meat-free burger in supermarkets in addition to restaurants.

This is wonderful news for those who are increasingly looking to move away from red meat, and it shows that there’s enough consumer interest in the plant-based goods for supermarkets to stock another brand. READ MORE

Houseplants are the most beautiful indoor air pollution solution

Break Up With Your Break Up Story

Posted on September 25, 2019

How breaking up the narrative of a failed relationship can help you move on

Breakups can painful and difficult to move on from. They can be distracting and painful, but therapist Lisa Firestone, Ph.D., urges clients to rethink the narrative of their relationship to form a better outlook on the future. Are you reflecting on your time together truthfully? What is an honest story of the time you spent together? How you tell the story of a relationship impacts your impression of the time you spent together, and changing the narrative can help people develop a more positive outlook and find closure. Firestone lists five critical steps to rethinking your kinship for a constructive new beginning.

  1. Acknowledge your “critical inner voice” and filter out the negativity.
  2. Let go of the fantasy of love
  3. Adopt a growth mindset
  4. Practice self-compassion
  5. Create a coherent narrative
So whether you tell a friend, write it down, or just speak it to yourself, when you tell the narrative of a relationship, make sure it is honest and told in a way that helps you move on rather than holds you in the past. READ MORE
