A Soft Alternative

Posted on September 20, 2019

It’s time to say goodbye to fabric softener

Fabric softeners may seem like a tempting addition to your laundry machine – they act to smooth your clothes, eliminate static and wrinkles, and on top of all that, they add a pleasant scent to your wardrobe. Yet, all of these apparent benefits come at a cost – for your clothes, your health, and the planet; not to mention your wallet.

As ethical fashion blogger Verena Erin explains in her writeup, adding softeners to our laundry routine introduces a host of harmful chemicals to our bodies. Among such chemicals are Quaternary ammonium compounds, or simply ‘quats’, which are linked to respiratory and skin irritations and harmful to marine environments. Other things that softeners contain are fragrances and phthalates – known endocrine disruptors – as well as preservatives and colors that are linked to skin irritations and even cancer.

What’s more, softeners are not even good for clothing. The layer of lubricating chemicals that they add to your laundry builds up over time, causing yellowing in clothes and reducing the absorbency of fabrics, which may be why your old towels don’t soak up water like they used to.

Fortunately, giving up fabric softener is not that difficult today, with plenty of healthier, natural, and safer alternatives available out there. The source article from Treehugger has some suggestions. READ MORE

In solidarity with global climate strike, Patagonia will close its doors September 20th

Companies are slowing beginning to acknowledge the need for greater environmental consciousness in their business practices, but one company has been practicing green corporate responsibility for years and continues to put its money where its mouth is: Patagonia. In keeping with their environmentally oriented business platform, Patagonia will close its doors in honor of the youth climate strike this Friday, September 20th.

The company has donated millions of dollars to environmental causes and practices green textile production within its own brand. Patagonia’s CEO Rose Marcario was very clear about her reasons for supporting the youth climate strikes started by 16-year-old activist Greta Thunberg: “For decades, many corporations have single-mindedly pursued profits at the expense of everything else — employees, communities and the air, land, and water we all share. Now we face a dangerously hot and fast-changing climate that is exacerbating natural disasters, causing food and water shortages, and speeding us toward the biggest economic catastrophe in history. The plain truth is that capitalism needs to evolve if humanity is going to survive.”

We at the Optimist Daily applaud environmentally conscious business models and encourage you to learn more about the global climate strike and how corporations play a part in climate change. READ MORE

Healthy At Any Age

Why it’s never to late to starting working out

At the ripe age of 70, Jim Owen finally came to realize that his successful career on Wall Street was a burden on his health. Not necessarily because of the stress that came with the job, but because he had been sedentary most of the time.

Owen finally began exercising after this realization and completely reclaimed his physical health over the years, even though he was 70 when he kickstarted his new active lifestyle. Now at the age of 79, Owen is as healthy as can be. A new study in the journal, Frontiers in Physiology, backs up what Owen witnessed firsthand: Even if you’ve never worked out regularly and are older, your body has the same ability to build muscle mass.

A team at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom compared the ability of men to build muscle mass. They looked at two groups: People older than 60 who exercised at least twice a week for at least 20 years and those who didn’t have a consistent workout routine. Participants had a muscle biopsy 48 hours before consuming an isotope tracer drink and conducting a weight training session, then another biopsy after finishing. The drink enabled the researchers to see how proteins were developing within the muscle.

The results? Both groups had equal abilities to build muscle in response to exercise—showing it’s never too late to start working out. The researchers do have one caution though: if you’re new to the gym, you might want to start off slowly to avoid injury. READ MORE

Feeding the future

Posted on September 19, 2019

Are insects the world’s next great protein source?

Would you consider eating some crickets today as your afternoon snack? How about a handful of honey ants or a skewer of grubs? If not, you may want to consider expanding your palate because a study in England has found that 37% of people think we will be eating more insects within the next decade.

Although unusual for Western cultures, insects are actually a nutritious and environmentally friendly food option for feeding a growing global population. In many places around the world, they have long been a staple in the diet, helping to round out a mostly vegetarian plate or supplement proteins and fats when times are lean. But more and more, adventurous eaters and food entrepreneurs are experimenting with insects as a food source. They take minimal space and energy to produce and contain essential proteins, minerals, fats, and amino acids. Here at the Optimist Daily, we have been writing about food innovations for the 21st century, such as soil health and plant-based meat alternatives. Finding sustainable protein sources, such as insects, is another important aspect of feeding the future. READ MORE

Bosnian Pride

Posted on September 18, 2019

Bosnia just held its first Gay Pride Parade ever—and it was a success!

While most of us here in the US would not raise an eyebrow when a gay pride parade to takes place in the streets, in many parts of the world, such a thing would be unthinkable. This has long been the case in Bosnia, the last Balkan country to hold a pride parade.

Homophobia is, unfortunately, still widespread in Bosnia, and conservative religious groups still hold much sway over the public. This weekend, however, there was a breakthrough in Bosnia, as several thousand people marched in Bosnia’s first Gay Pride. Seeing that it was the first time Bosnia and its capital, Sarajevo, hosted such as an event, there was a heavy police presence guarding the event.

Fortunately, the parade happened without any incident, as people from all country carried rainbow flags and banners with slogans such as “Ima Izac” or ‘I Want Out’ in both Latin and Cyrillic scripts. Considering that Bosnia is seeking to join the European Union, this was a big test that showed, at the very least, more tolerance towards basic human rights. READ MORE
