Stockton UBI experiment:

Posted on October 9, 2019

Recipients are spending money only to cover basic needs

The first results from a Universal Basic Income (UBI) experiment in Stockton, California are in—and guess what? They’re already disproving one of the most popular arguments levied against UBI, which is that recipients will use the money on frivolous purchases. In Stockton, the early results show most of the 125 people in the program used the $500 they received each month for food, utility bills, and clothing. A new Associated Press story breaks down the spending: recipients spent about 40 percent of the funds on food, 24 percent on sales and merchandise, and 11 percent on utility bills. They spent the remainder on car maintenance, medical expenses, insurance, education, self-care, and even donations. Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs is hopeful the new data will help “win over” skeptics of UBI — and potentially convince lawmakers to take the program nationwide.

Put an end to the “what ifs”

Posted on October 8, 2019

Here’s how to stop letting fear of failure hold you back

Winston Churchill once said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” Failure in any of its forms, professional or personal, can discourage us from embarking on new endeavors. Here are five strategies to overcome the fatal “what ifs” and defeat your fear of failure.

Pinpoint exactly what you’re afraid of: by locating the source of your fear, it can be much easier to challenge it or plan around it. It might even sound so unlikely that it ceases to be a fear.
Answer your “what if?” questions: when you answer the “what if” question, you work through the worst-case scenario and come out on the other side with a plan. Suddenly, you know how you would either rectify the situation or take care of yourself and move on, which instantly makes things less scary.
Stop visualizing success: our positive visualizations are idealized versions of our goals—in our mind’s eye, success is total and complete, costs are negligible, exertion is light, and the number of newbie ‘oopsies’ are few. With this idealized image in mind, we may lose motivation to dig deep or focus our energy. Instead, reflect on the obstacles that stand in the way of that future. Only when you do that will you stop fantasizing and start doing.
Focus on the process, not the end result: set attainable goals and go after them. And most importantly, enjoy the ride.
Remember failure is fleeting: when we say we fear failure, what we truly fear is being a failure, which we perceive as something permanent and irredeemable. By contrast, the experience of failure is temporary and changeable. It doesn’t feel good while it’s happening, but you always learn something and then?
Whether you botched a project, ended a relationship, or lost a game, remember failure is part of the process. It’s a stopover, a natural part of life that we can learn from and move on from. READ MORE

The Giving Spirit

This dive bar in Florida peeled nearly $14,000 off its walls for Hurricane Dorian Relief

There’s an old dive bar in Florida where it’s long been a custom for bar-goers to staple a dollar bill onto the walls. Employees tell customers that it’s an old fisherman’s tradition — explaining that the seamen would staple a dollar to the wall to make sure they had money for a drink when they returned from sea.

The dive bar has had this tradition for years, with the walls and the ceiling being entirely covered with dollar bills (that doesn’t sound very sanitary). But ever since Hurricane Dorian devastated the Bahamas, the bar’s staff has been carefully peeling the money from the walls to donate to aid relief in the Bahamas.

One month later and an entire month of peeling later, a total of $13,961 has been pulled off the walls—all of which will be donated to the Red Cross for Hurricane Dorian relief. Very cool!

The End of Late Fees

Posted on October 4, 2019

Chicago’s public libraries are the latest to do away with overdue book fees

The city of Chicago’s public library system is the latest and the largest library system to do away with late fees for overdue materials. The change comes as a response to the fact that late charges were disproportionately affecting the city’s lower-income residents, one in three of which has their card on hold for fines, compared to one in six in the wealthier regions of the city. Other cities, such as Phoenix, Dallas, and San Francisco have also adopted fee-free policies in an effort to keep reading material equally accessible for all.

Curtis Rogers, communications director for the Urban Libraries Council, says: “Overdue fines are not distinguishing between people who are responsible and who are not. They’re distinguishing between people who can and cannot use the money to overcome a common oversight.”

Chicago’s libraries will instead automatically renew materials for up to 15 times before members are charged for the item. Studies have found that library fees ultimately do not reduce overdue book rates, and adopting more lenient policies is a more effective way to keep learning materials available for all.

Would You Wear This Fabric?

Posted on October 3, 2019

These algae-based clothes photosynthesize while you wear them

Talk about thinking outside the box, a designer by the name of Roya Aghighi has designed clothes from algae that turn carbon dioxide into oxygen via photosynthesis. Named Biogarmentry, the clothes are the proof of concept for a textile made with living, photosynthetic cells. To make the fabric for Biogarmentry, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a type of single-cell green algae, are spun together with nano polymers. The result, which feels like linen, is “the first non woven living and photosynthetic textile” to be created.

Obviously this is quite an alternative to fast fashion – one that beckons the wearer to think and act differently with their clothing. In fact, wearers of Biogarmentry would need to take care of their garment as they would a plant in order to keep them alive, rather than engaging in the environmentally destructive practice of making synthetic clothes and discarding them after a few uses. That also means that rather than tossing them into the washing machine, the owner just needs to spray them with water once a week.

While it may seem odd to have clothing that performs photosynthesis, there’s a huge benefit that comes with wearing Biogarmentry: the immediate environment around you is improved as your clothes turn carbon dioxide into oxygen.
