Huge Leap Forward in Cancer Detection

Posted on October 3, 2019

New blood test can detect more than 20 types of cancer in one go

Innovations in the world of medicine have allowed doctors to test for a variety of cancers, but screening for multiple types of cancers at the same time, and with a single test, has been a pipe dream. That is, until now.

In a recent breakthrough study, scientists have developed a new type of blood test that can detect more than 20 types of cancer and even trace them back to their source.

The novel technology centers on the detection of methyl groups, which are small units of chemicals that can attach themselves to DNA and influence which genes are switched on or off. When these patterns of on-and-off genes expression differ from the norm, they can be indicative of cancer.

In the study, the researchers applied the sequencing technology that scans for these irregularities to almost 3,600 blood samples, drawn from both healthy subjects and patients suffering from more than 20 types of cancer – including breast, gall bladder, lung, pancreatic, and leukemia. It indicated the presence of the cancers with 99.4 percent accuracy. What’s more, the test was able to correctly identify the organ or tissue where the tumor originated.

The findings pave the way for new technologies that could enable doctors to detect cancer at earlier stages and essentially save the lives of hundreds of thousands of people annually.

Another Meat Free Option!

Posted on October 2, 2019

McDonald’s has finally given in to plant-based meat trend

Over the last couple of months, we have seen numerous fast-food chains embracing the idea of plant-based food items. Burger King now has the ‘Impossible Whopper”, Subway has “Beyond meatballs”, and even KFC launched its “Beyond Fried Chicken”, which caused a frenzied reaction from the crowd upon its launch.

Surprisingly, one of the few chains to hold back from the plant-based craze of the couple months has been fast-food giant McDonald’s. McDonald’s initially held back from rolling out its own meatless burger, waiting for the trend to be substantiated with actual long term interest from customers. It now seems that fast-food meatless options are here to stay, considering McDonald’s is finally caving to the trend and will start rolling out its own Beyond Meat burger patty.

The new food option, named the “P.L.T.” (Plant. Lettuce. Tomato.), will be tested in Ontario, Canada for 12 weeks. This small roll out from McDonald’s will serve to test the P.L.T., with further plans to expand if the initial rollout is successful. With meatless patties tasting more and more like actual meat, it’s expected that the item can attract both meat and non-meat eaters. Hopefully, it will spur people to ditch the meat options altogether.

The Next Alt-Animal Product

Posted on October 2, 2019

A new product is swimming into the world of plant based meat alternatives

Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat introduced the world to alt meat that tastes, feels, and even bleeds like the real deal. Now, a new product is swimming into the alternative meat market: plant-based shrimp. Created by the San Francisco based company, New Wave, the product mirrors the flavors and texture of the world’s most popular seafood. Tyson Foods is a prominent investor in the start-up and hopes the seaweed-infused product will capture the attention of chefs who often struggle to price shrimp on menus due to its volatile market cost.

As opposed to burgers, which are often adorned with condiments, shrimp recipes typically have fewer complementary flavors to distract the consumer, and New Wave says creating alternative meat able to stand alone in terms of flavor and consistency was the main concern. This successful jump into the alternative shellfish market opens up new doors in the world of meat substitution and could pave the way for even more varieties of environment-friendly alt-animal products. If even the world’s most unique flavors and textures of shrimp can be replicated in a plant-based and economically efficient way, the potential for other alternatives could be jumbo.

Moving with the Seasons

The ultimate guide to preparing your houseplants for autumn

As the summer fades away and autumn takes its place, it’s time to start preparing your houseplants for the change in the climate. Here’s how to keep your houseplants happy as the days get cooler and shorter.

The first thing you want to do is bring your plants inside if you’ve been letting them vacation outside. Make sure to do so before the temperatures fall below 55F, and check them thoroughly to be sure that they are not bringing any hitchhikers along with them.

Next, repot your houseplants, if necessary. Spring is the best time to repot houseplants because that’s when they strive to grow, but if any of your babies have had an active summer and are too small for their pot, now is a good time as well.

After you do this, give them a shower. Autumn is the perfect time to “leach out any salt build-up by letting the water run freely out of the bottom of the pot.’ Once you’ve done that, spray some water onto the plant’s leaves to clean off any dust that might have collected on the foliage.

The fourth thing you should do is tuck them in with a snack. Houseplants won’t need any fertilizer during fall and winter, but they might appreciate one last snack—such as a liquid, all-purpose fertilizer at half the strength recommended.

You should also consider the light when preparing for the cooler months. On the equinox, the sun rose and set at exactly due east and due west … but as the season crawls along, our favorite giant star shifts across the sky and enters our homes in different ways. Note how light streams in and place plants accordingly. This is a good thing to check every few months.

The last two tips are ones you should keep in mind throughout the year: be mindful of extreme temperatures, and be careful with watering. Hot and cold extremes can stress plants out, so keep them in a relatively stable spot. As for the water in the colder months, less is needed as there is less light, meaning the plants won’t grow as much as in the spring.

Live Like You Mean It

How to live a more intentional life, according to a clinical therapist

How do we live with intention without falling into the cycle of becoming frazzled from being too busy? To get out of this cycle and harness our potential, licensed therapist Shannon Thomas offers us a five-step approach that will help you live a more intentional life.

First step: Identify areas of growth. Write down three character qualities you want to see in yourselves. These may be some you’ve already cultivated but struggle to maintain, and others could be personal growth goals that have been out of reach until now. Once you’ve identified these qualities, move onto the next step.

Second step: Gain new knowledge. Any life growth must begin by taking the time to educate ourselves. We cannot set out to make changes and have no idea where we’re going. Reading books, blogs, watching TED Talks, knowledgeable YouTube vloggers, and other influencers can help us find the tips and tricks to implement the character growth we want to see in ourselves. And while it may be difficult to find the knowledge out there that speaks to you, don’t let that discourage you. These things take time.

Third step: Find ways to try out your new skills. For instance, if your identified area of growth is to start speaking the truth in love, try to find specific environments where you can practice feeling comfortable sharing your feelings with others. Seek out the people in your life who will receive your words in a healthy manner and encourage you to speak up.

Fourth step: Once you’re done sharing your thoughts with a trusted person, it would be important to step back and reflect on the experience. What worked? What didn’t go smoothly? In hindsight, what would you change in the future while trying to speak the truth in love? Being able to gently assess ourselves is an essential component of personal growth and living with intention.

Fifth step: Try again. Remember that all personal growth takes practice. Learning to try again is a key component of moving forward and can help us continuously work towards living a more intentional life.
