5 key behaviors to make yourself better at handling stress

Posted on March 29, 2019

How to make yourself more resilient to stressHow to make yourself more resilient to stress

Resilience, psychologically speaking, is the ability to adapt to adversity or significant stress. When faced with difficulty, resilient people recover more quickly. They view setbacks as temporary and move forward despite uncertainty. The thing is, resilience isn’t a magical quality that’s bestowed upon a strong few. Everyone is equipped with some degree of resilience, and you can intentionally deepen your capacity to bounce back. The following 5 behaviors will help you strengthen your resilience. First, you have to change your relationship with stress. Instead of viewing stress as a sign of failure or as a threat, you can choose to look for the challenge within it or the lesson to be learned. By doing so, you’re cultivating what psychologist Martin Seligman calls an optimistic explanatory style, or the ability to perceive setbacks as temporary and solvable. Second, manage your emotions. Instead of responding to stress with angry outbursts, allow yourself to process difficult emotions like frustration and anger. Writing about those difficult emotions can help you understand them better, which can help you express yourself better. Third key behavior: take action even when the outcomes are unclear. It can be nerve-wracking to make decisions amidst uncertainty, but by doing so, you can get out of your slumps and make progress over time. Fourth, don’t skimp on self-care. Being resilient requires energy, so make sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating well, and exercising. Number five: nurture your network. Keep your relationships healthy so that when you’re going through a hard time, you can reach out to mentors, coaches, and colleagues. When you have a powerful support network, your resilience will only improve.    READ MORE

Napping is good for your heart

Posted on March 28, 2019

Napping could reduce your risks of suffering from cardiovascular disease Napping could reduce your risks of suffering from cardiovascular disease

It’s commonly known among sleep enthusiasts that napping during the day can restore alertness, enhance performance, and boost your overall mood. More recently, a new study has found that midday naps are good for more than just that. Researchers found that people who nap during the day are more likely to experience a drop in blood pressure, just as significantly as other lifestyle changes, and thus reduce their risk of suffering from cardiovascular diseases like heart attack. The research team reached these findings by analyzing 212 participants, half of whom napped during the day and the others sleeping only at night. After adjusting for factors known to affect blood pressure levels (like age and gender), the researchers found that those who took a nap during the day experienced lower blood pressure. Considering the great benefits (and pleasure) that come with napping, it would seem reasonable for everyone to reserve at least an hour a day for a good old snooze. READ MORE

Antioxidant found in mushrooms may inhibit dementia

Posted on March 28, 2019

Eating mushrooms on a daily basis can protect your brain from cognitive decline Eating mushrooms on a daily basis can protect your brain from cognitive decline

We’ve already heard how the psilocybin from so-called “magic” mushrooms may help to alleviate depression. Well, a new study now suggests that a compound found in all mushrooms could also assist in warding off mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The researchers found that by consuming different variations of mushrooms on a daily basis, you can cut the odds of developing MCI by 50 percent. It’s suspected that mushrooms’ relatively high concentrations of a certain antioxidant may inhibit the production of proteins that are linked to dementia and other types of cognitive decline. While MCI isn’t as severe as dementia, it can make understanding information or completing complex tasks a lot harder. READ MORE

7 ways to declutter your inbox for good

Posted on March 27, 2019

declutter your inbox for good Declutter your email inbox once and for all with these 7 tips

Email was once hailed as the digital tool that would revolutionize our ability to be organized and productive. If you ask us though, it feels like email does just the opposite. Take just a day away from the computer and you’ll often find yourself drowning in a digital ocean of unread mail when you open up your inbox. But there are ways to minimize your inbox and take control of the darn thing. The following 7 tips will help you do just that. First off, delete more mail than you typically receive in a day so that, over time, you’ll get ahead. If that sounds boring, just put on a favorite song and delete away. Secondly, unsubscribe constantly. Be religious about taking 15 seconds to unsubscribe whenever you get a newsletter or promotional email that you don’t want. Number three: delete it all. Of course this depends on one’s circumstances, but deleting your whole inbox is not as impossible as you might think and can be immensely satisfying. The next tip is to adherer to the ‘touch once’ rule. The idea is that, to maximize efficiency, you make a decision about an email immediately once you open it. The fifth tip is especially important: create a schedule for checking emails and do it all in one go—it will help you avoid distraction throughout the day. Tip number six: don’t use email on your phone. Leave that task for a regular workstation computer. And last but not least, ask some people to call you instead of sending emails. Then neither of you has an additional email needing to get deleted at some point.    READ MORE

Second person ever has been cured of HIV

Posted on March 27, 2019

2nd man to be cured of HIV British man becomes only the second person ever to be cured of HIV

In 2007, a patient with HIV became the first and only patient to have ever been cured of the infection. Doctors have tried and tried again to duplicate the successful treatment, but to no avail…until this week. That’s right, for just the second time since the HIV epidemic began, a patient in London appears to have been cured thanks to a bone-marrow transplant that was intended to treat cancer, not HIV. In both successful cases, bone-marrow transplants have unexpectedly led to the cure. Although bone-marrow transplantation is unlikely to be a realistic treatment option in the near future due to the risky nature of it, rearming the body with immune cells similarly modified to resist HIV might well succeed as a practical treatment.
