What is the Akrasia Effect?

Posted on April 25, 2019

These three strategies will help you beat procrastination

One explanation for why procrastination can rule our lives and pull us in has to do with a behavioral economics term called “time inconsistency.” Time inconsistency refers to the tendency of the human brain to value immediate rewards more highly than future rewards. When you make plans for yourself — like setting a goal to lose weight or write a book or learn a language — you are actually making plans for your future self. You are envisioning what you want your life to be like in the future and when you think about the future it is easy for your brain to see the value in taking actions with long-term benefits. When the time comes to make a decision, however, you are no longer making a choice for your future self. Now you are in the moment and your brain is thinking about the present self. And researchers have discovered that the present self really likes instant gratification, not long-term payoff. To overcome this way of thinking and beat procrastination, try these three strategies. First strategy: design your future actions by creating a “commitment device.” This entails making a choice that will lock in future behavior, bind you to good habits, and restrict you from bad ones. For example, you may lock your phone away until you finish that essay you’re supposed to write. Second strategy: Reduce the friction of starting. We procrastinate not because the actual process of working is hard, but because starting the work is hard. To ease this pain, put your energy into creating a ritual that makes it as easy as possible to get started. Third strategy: Utilize implementation intentions. This is when you state your intention to implement a particular behavior at a specific time. For example, “I will exercise for at least 30 minutes on [DATE] in [PLACE] at [TIME].” Research suggests this actually helps get people to beat procrastination. READ MORE

Want to be more curious?

Here’s a simple way to cultivate more curiosity within you
cultivate curiosity

In the 21st century, we need skills to solve complex problems and address challenges that do not have one answer and cannot be distilled into mathematical equations or contained by traditional borders. And with the rise of automation, skills that machines and robots simply can’t do—skills that are “unautomatable”—become all the more important. That’s where curiosity comes in. People who are curious are better able to identify what fascinates them, allowing them to nurture that fascination and create new solutions. Want to become a more curious person? One easy way is to rethink the way you have conversations and focus on asking better questions. Organizations like the Right Question Institute help people do exactly this, with clear guidance and details. But it’s easier than that; there are simple exercises you can do to get started. For example, pick a topic and ask as many questions as you can about it in five minutes. Don’t judge; just ask. Chances are great that this will help to not only organize your thinking but also to spur new ideas, connections … and even answers. If you’re hungry for more tips on how to cultivate curiosity, take a look right here. READ MORE

Got ants? Here’s how to keep them out of your house naturally

Posted on April 24, 2019

Forget bug spray! Make this natural spray and keep ants out of the kitchen

Whenever you see little critters such as ants crawl into your kitchen, your first instinct is probably to buy a bug spray and douse them with the poisonous solution. Sure, this may be an effective way to rid your home of insects, but it’s terrible for two reasons. First off, bug sprays are made of toxic chemicals that are awful for humans and can affect our cells in unintended ways. Nobody should be exposed to these chemicals in the kitchen, let alone the home. The second reason you should abstain from bug spray is that with insect populations plummeting, we shouldn’t be trying to kill insects—even if they’re in our homes. Instead of using bug spray, there’s a natural non-toxic spray you can make that will get ants out of your house while simultaneously making your home smell good. And best of all, you can make it out of basic household items. All you need to do is add citrus rinds (lemons, lime, orange) to a pot and add white vinegar to cover. Next, gently heat the mixture until it’s steaming, turn off the stove, and let the mix sit for several hours. After that, all you need to do is pour it into a spray bottle and store it in the refrigerator for when you need to use it. The reason why this natural citrus vinegar spray is so effective is that it disrupts the pheromone trail that ants use to navigate along their paths. Apparently, they get one whiff and hightail it out of there. That’s much better than dousing it over the ants and making them suffer. READ MORE

May Peace Prevail

Peace: A New Definition
may peace prevail

By Sadie Wilbur

The sun warms my skin as I step out of the car and, with a deep breath, the fresh morning air fills my lungs and wakes my senses. It’s the same walk into the Optimist Daily office that I make every morning, but today I stop and notice a white pole standing to the right of the entrance that reads, “May Peace Prevail On Earth.” A small gold plaque below indicates that the pole represents a peace prize from the United Nations Association (UNA) of Santa Barbara and Tri-Counties, the oldest chapter in the nation. As a… READ MORE

How to Handle Chronic Stress

Five stress-reducing tips for the overwhelmed millennial
stressed millenials

Millennials are known to be the most stressed generation we’ve ever seen, and the evidence is there to prove it. Research points out that depression is on the rise among younger millennials. Men in this generation are also said to be losing their hair at an earlier age. And the fact that student debt is at an all-time high isn’t helping either. Still, it doesn’t need to be so dark. With a few changes to your mindset, you can shrug off the stress and start feeling better. Elyse Fox, a millennial who has overcome chronic stress, has some tips for you right here that will help relax a little more.

First, realize the power of ‘no’. Using the power of “no” can help prevent you from burning out throughout the week. You may need to say “no” if you’re feeling overloaded at work or in your relationships. Ultimately, it’s important to know and define your limits, and use the word ‘no’ when needed. The second tip: get into journaling. Other than costing you little to no money at all, it’s a fantastic way to manage anxiety. It can also help you get to know yourself better so you can identify possible stress triggers. The third thing Fox recommends is practicing yoga…in your bedroom. You don’t need to go to a yoga studio to experience the stress-relieving power of yoga. Youtube has you covered with quality lessons that are short and sweet. Writing appreciation lists is the fourth tip from Fox. Keep a pad near your bed and each night before you fall asleep, write out a list of 10 positive moments that happened throughout the day. Lastly, Fox says to check out Finsta, a social media platform where people can be as silly and unpolished as they like while remaining in touch with friends online. READ MORE
