When To Skip the Wash

Five strategies that will help you do less laundry

If it feels like you constantly have a load of laundry to do, then your approach to laundry might be all wrong. The truth is running your clothes through the washing machine shortens the lifespan of your clothes, and beyond this, running the washing machine is an energy-intensive process that uses a lot of water. Plus, doing the laundry just takes time away from other things you could be doing. With this in mind, here are a few key strategies for keeping the laundry from piling up.

First strategy: buy more natural fabrics. These do not hold onto odor nearly as much as synthetics. A pair of wool socks, for example, can be worn 3-4 days in a row, without smelling, as can wool, hemp, or cotton shirt. No smell, no need for washing.

Second strategy: air your clothes out. This is an amazingly effective step that too often gets overlooked. Hanging clothes on an indoor laundry rack and leaving them overnight can make them smell much fresher the next day. Obviously, this doesn’t work if the item stinks like B.O. and needs laundering, but if a shirt just has that ‘worn’ smell but doesn’t have a bad odor or visible dirt, it can work wonders.

Third strategy: spot-wash. Instead of washing the whole garment when it gets a little dirty, just aim to clean the spot where it’s dirty. This will extend the use of the garment by an extra day or two.

Fourth strategy: rethink your standards. While we all should be clean and smell good, society’s standards of hygiene can a bit over the top. There’s nothing wrong with wearing a shirt that’s still clean, but not just cleaned.

Fifth strategy: own fewer clothes! This may sound counterintuitive, but when you have only a handful of items in the closet that you really like wearing, you’re more inclined to stretch the time between washes. READ MORE

Here’s how long you should nap, depending on what you want out of your day

Waking up from a refreshing nap feels great. You’re no longer exhausted, have more energy and can focus on what you need to get done. The problem is that not every nap falls into this category. Sometimes our naps last too long, leaving us disoriented when we wake up, and somehow, even more, tired than before. If it sounds like figuring out the perfect nap is a science, that’s because it is. The benefits of a nap are highly dependent on how long you sleep. Here’s a breakdown of what happens to your brain during naps of different lengths.

10 minutes: Believe it or not, even just a 10-minute nap can make a big difference. In a 2016 study published in the journal Sleep, researchers found that snoozing for 10 minutes can immediately increase alertness and boost cognitive performance for as long as three hours.

20 minutes: The National Sleep Foundation says that 20 minutes is an ideal nap length, allowing you to reap benefits like improved alertness, enhanced performance and being in a better mood.

60 minutes: If you are able to sleep for a full hour in the afternoon, you may be less impulsive and more tolerant of frustration. The only problem is that if you nap more than 30 minutes during the day, it may disrupt your sleep later that night.

90 minutes: Though a 90-minute nap is usually too long, that’s not necessarily the case if your sleep was severely disrupted the night before. Having said that, napping for an hour and a half can provide the same cognitive benefits as an eight-hour sleep period On top of that, a 90-minute nap can boost your creativity. While you’re planning your nap, don’t forget to time it during the right time of day as well. You may also want to time your caffeine intake with your naps to maximize the benefits. READ MORE

How to keep your home cool without using air conditioning

We all want a cool home when the hot summer months arrive, but using the air-conditioning wastes a lot of energy. Not to mention it can cost a fortune to keep the air-conditioning on. To save yourself some money and the planet, here are a few ways to keep your home chill without flipping on the AC.

First, open the windows. Creating a cross-breeze is one of the most effective ways to cool a home. The key to effective breeze cooling is figuring out which direction the wind blows. In some areas, it’s fairly consistent, commonly coming from the same direction during the same times each day (most often in the afternoon). Open up windows during that “window” of a breeze to encourage the flow through your home.

Using blinds is another way to keep your home cool. When your windows are closed, blinds can help stop heat from entering the home through your windows.

Another effective strategy to keep the sun from injecting blistering heat into a room is to keep it dark. Completely close off rooms when they are not being used. If you don’t mind being left in the dark, install blackout curtains, which effectively block the heat from entering the room through the window. Both ceiling fans and box fans are useful for cooling space without cranking up the energy bill. To create even cooler air, place a container of ice directly in front of the fan. The air from the fan will bounce off the ice and direct the cool air across the room.
