Talk to Strangers

Posted on July 8, 2019

Do you get bored talking to strangers? Try this next time you talk to one

Conversations with strangers can go one of two ways. Some are unyieldingly boring—an exchange of information in which neither side reveals more about themselves than could be gleaned from LinkedIn. But in some interactions there’s an alchemy at work, the meeting of two minds sparking a change in both during which something new—less tangible than gold, but nonetheless beautiful—is created.

The question is: how do you avoid the dull exchanges, which can be exhausting and depressing, especially if your work involves meeting a lot of people? Cassie Werber from Quartz offers us a tip for making the most out of conversations with strangers.

To avoid boring conversations, the most important thing you must do is set an intention. In this case, that intention might be avoiding routine, conventional questions and instead, using whatever you find genuinely interesting as your guide throughout a conversation. Werber offers up a good example. At a dinner between two psychology professors, the temptation for her was to ask about the other’s research. But this information is already available online. Instead, Werber asked how their findings informed their parenting choices, because, as a new parent, this information was much more interesting. From there the conversation could grow in a non-typical way.

Werber stresses that this tip might be particularly good for introverts. For extroverts, a good way to have better conversations with strangers is to ask questions and simply listen. Because as much as you might enjoy voicing your own opinion, we get more out of the conversation by discovering what others truly think and feel. READ MORE

Are You Getting Enough Seeds?

Posted on July 8, 2019

Give your body the boost it needs by adding these 8 seeds to your diet

One of the simplest ways you can boost your gut health and give yourself more natural energy throughout the day is by incorporating more seeds into your diet. Seeds are “little bundles of energy, protein and nutrients” that can be sprinkled, crushed, or pureed into tasty spreads to deliver tons of healthy benefits. If you want to benefit from the power of seeds, here are 8 seeds to start incorporating into your diet.

Starting off this list is chia seeds. These tiny seeds are a great plant source of omega-3 essential fatty acids and the mineral calcium. Should you start eating more chia seeds, make sure to drink plenty of water with chia since the seeds absorb liquid and may increase constipation if you’re even just mildly dehydrated.

Next up we have pepitas (pumpkin seeds), which are a great source of heart-healthy fats, magnesium, and phosphorus. On top of that, they’re also rich in protein.

Flax seeds are also a great source of essential fatty acids. Just remember that you need to grind whole flax seeds in order to reap the benefits.

Hulled hemp seeds have a delicate, nutty flavor that is a great addition to almost anything and can help prevent many chronic diseases, such as heart disease and osteoarthritis.

Fifth on our list is watermelon seeds. Simply put, these seeds are protein bombs.

Then we have sesame seeds, which is a great source of iron, something that many of us could use more of. One of the best ways to get your dose of sesame is through tahini, which is used in traditional hummus and baba ghanoush.

Number seven: sunflower seeds. A favorite of baseball players, sunflower seeds are rich in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant.

And rounding up our list we have the seeds of common spices such as fennel, cumin, and mustard. Adding just a few of these seeds to your culinary repertoire can give you a giant dose of minerals, unsaturated fats, and protein. READ MORE

How Eco-Friendly is Your Bathroom?

Posted on July 5, 2019

Six alternatives to your wasteful bathroom essentials

When you’re trying to make your lifestyle less wasteful, the products you regularly pose a bit of a tricky problem. We’re all dependent on them, and yet, they’re almost always wrapped in plastic and are meant to be disposed of. But things are changing. More and more of the essential products we use on a daily basis are being created in ways that are reusable, refillable, or less wasteful in general. Without further ado, here are 6 eco-friendly alternatives to the bathroom essentials you always use.

First alternative: The Leaf Razor. This reusable razor comes with blades that you can insert yourself. To further customize your shave, the Leaf’s design gives you the option of adding one to three blades. Its weighty, sleek handle can be used over and over; you just need to call in replacement blades when you run out.

Second alternative: The Last Swab. An alternative to the 1.5 billion single-use cotton swabs used around the world every day, it’s a reusable swab that’s made from an easy-to-clean nylon and silicone blend. It’s raised $880,000 on Kickstarter and counting, so, safe to say, people are all ears for this one.

Third alternative: Croon Cleansing Wipes. These soft microfiber rounds are an alternative to makeup removers or cleansing wipes. Just add water, and the superfine fabric will work to cleanse and exfoliate. They’re perfect for traveling with limited space for bottles and serums, and you can wash each one up to 200 times.

Fourth alternative: Dental Lace. Dental floss containers are notoriously difficult to recycle, but this one made of glass can be used again and again. Buy it once and order silk floss refills (that come in compostable packaging) when you’re running low.

Fifth alternative: byHumankind Deodorant. This natural deodorant comes in a refillable container that’s guaranteed to last forever, and $1 of every purchase goes toward removing plastic waste from the ocean.

Sixth alternative: All of New Zealand brand Ethique’s soaps come in plastic-free, recyclable packaging, work into a super satisfying lather, and will last you longer than the bottled soap. READ MORE

Get Back in the Habit

Haven’t worked out in ages? Here are 3 strategies to motivate yourself again

Working out can be hard, but what’s even harder is working out after months of avoiding any form of fitness. Just trying to get back into the swing of things can be such a struggle that you take another huge break before trying again. To ease your fitness frustration and give you the motivation to get back on track, here are three science-backed ways that will help you make your workouts more enjoyable so you look forward to moving again.

First strategy: play upbeat music. We all know that a great playlist can make or break a workout, and science agrees: A recent study from the University of British Columbia found that insufficiently active people worked harder in their workouts and enjoyed them more when listening to upbeat music. That’s because it is a dissociative that can “draw your attention away from the body’s physiological responses to exercise” and give you the energy to push onward.

Second strategy: find a workout buddy (or a whole team!). Keeping up with a consistent habit is always easier when you have a friend or support group to help hold you accountable, and recently reported data from 1.2 million people in the US proves this to be true.

Third strategy: When it feels hard, try smiling. It might feel counterintuitive at the moment, but researchers have found that smiling during a workout (even if it’s forced) can make your exercise more enjoyable, and can even encourage you to keep going when you’re feeling the burn. So the next time you’re thinking of throwing in the towel, try throwing on a smile instead. READ MORE

Avoid Mosquitos This Summer

Posted on July 3, 2019

Grow these plants around your home to keep mosquitos away naturally

While there are so many positives that come with the summer season, there’s one huge downside: mosquitos! But rather than rely on bug repellants or pest control sprays to ward off these nasty buggers, there a better, more natural way to keep the mosquitoes out of the house. The problem with conventional mosquito-fighting options is that they’re loaded with nasty additives, harmful fragrances, synthetic compounds, and dangerous chemicals. Not to mention they create waste in the form of plastic.

Instead, try using plants—yes plants— to keep mosquitos away. Lemon balm, for instance, promotes a healthy relationship to bugs. It brings in the right ones — pollinators like bees and butterflies — and deters mosquitoes. Mosquitoes don’t like the smell of lemon balm and so generally stay away from it.

Peppermint has also been proven to effectively stave off mosquitos. One study in which mosquito larvae were exposed to the oil resulted in a 100 percent mortality rate for the larvae. Planting peppermint around the yard will work well, but if you need more immediate backup, you can crush up the peppermint leaves in your hands to release a strong scent. Want to discover more mosquito-repelling plants? Look no further! READ MORE
