Should Balance Be Our Goal?

Posted on June 18, 2019

Don’t strive for work-life balance. Instead, strive for this

If you think about it, work-life balance is a strange aspiration for a fulfilling life. Balance is about stasis: if our lives were ever in balance — parents happy, kids are taken care of, work working — then our overriding thought would be to shout “Nobody move!” and pray all would stay perfect forever.

This false hope is made worse by the categories themselves. They imply that work is bad, and life is good; we lose ourselves in work but find ourselves in life; we survive work, but live life. And so the challenge, we are told, is to balance the heaviness of work with the lightness of life. Yet work is not the opposite of life. It is instead a part of life — just as the family is, as are friends and community and hobbies. All of these aspects of living have their share of wonderful, uplifting moments and their share of moments that drag us down.

The same is true of work, yet when we think of it as an inherent bad in need of a counterweight, we lose sight of the possibility for better. It seems more useful, then, to not try to balance the unbalanceable, but to treat work the same way you do life: By maximizing what you love. To see what we mean, have a look right here. READ MORE

Speak Up!

Striking up a conversation with a stranger may make you happier

Most people spend part of their everyday life surrounded by strangers, whether on their daily commute, sitting in a park or café, or visiting the supermarket. But how many times have you hesitated to interact with these strangers out of the belief that it would make both of you uncomfortable? It turns out that these beliefs, while common among people, may actually be unwarranted.

Research shows that people tend to underestimate the positive impact of connecting with others for both their own and others’ wellbeing. For example, having a conversation with a stranger on your way to work may leave you both feeling happier than you would think. What’s more, research has also found that simply reaching out to a fellow human being to say hello may be better received than people realize. Few start a conversation with a stranger, but most seem happy to talk if you reach out with good intentions.

These brief connections with strangers are not likely to turn a life of misery into one of bliss. However, they can change unpleasant moments – like the grind of a daily commute – into something more pleasant. So, the next time you’d like to help a stranger with something, or strike up a conversation, but are worried about how they might react, simply give it a try. READ MORE

Cheers to Good Health!

Boost your gut and brain health with a kombucha mocktail

If you want to boost the health of your gut and your brain in one go, then foods that are loaded with probiotics are exactly what you need. Probiotics are full of “good” bacteria, the kind that restores the natural balance of gut bacteria and helps reset your digestive system.

Studies have also shown that our gut is linked to our brain—what’s deemed the gut-brain axis. Apparently, gut microbiota interacts with the central nervous system, regulates brain chemistry, and affects neuroendocrine systems connected with stress and memory function. Certain probiotic strains such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, which are found in fermented foods and beverages like kombucha, may help ease symptoms associated with depression, anxiety, and stress while improving mood.

For a refreshing kick of probiotics, you have got to make yourself a kombucha mocktail: a simple combination of sparkling water, kombucha, and your choice of fresh juices and fruit wedges. Take a look here to get a more detailed recipe guide for making delicious kombucha mocktails. READ MORE

Burnout Self-Check

Posted on June 14, 2019

Burnout is no joke. Here’s how to find out if you’re suffering from one

It’s normal to feel stressed at work from time to time. But for some people, the stress becomes all-consuming, leading to exhaustion, cynicism, and hatred towards your job. This is known as burnout, which used to be classified as a problem related to life management, but was re-labeled as an “occupational phenomenon” by the World Health Organization to better reflect that burnout is a work-based syndrome caused by chronic stress. While burnout isn’t a mental health disorder, it’s also no joke: it can lead to very serious issues such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, and alcohol and drug abuse. So, how do you know if you’re on the verge of burnout? Well, a good starting point is to ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Has anyone close to you asked you to cut down on your work?
  2. In recent months have you become angry or resentful about your work or about colleagues, clients, or patients?
  3. Do you feel guilty that you are not spending enough time with your friends, family, or even yourself?
  4. Do you find yourself becoming increasingly emotional, for example crying, getting angry, shouting, or feeling tense for no obvious reason?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it might be time for a change.

There are things we can all do to reduce our own risk of burnout. One is to boost our levels of resilience. This means we’re able to respond to stress in a healthy way and can bounce back after challenges and grow stronger in the process. You can build your resilience by learning to switch off, setting boundaries for your work, and thinking more about play. As much as you can, inoculate yourself against job interference and prevent it from ebbing into your personal life.

No matter what your profession, don’t let your job become the only way you define yourself as a person. And if your job is making you miserable, consider moving jobs or at least have a look at what else is out there. You may surprise yourself. READ MORE

Use More, Waste Less

Why you shouldn’t throw away the pineapple core and other great food parts

Reducing food waste is one of the greatest ways for people to help reverse climate change, and at the same time save money, feed more people, and help preserve threatened ecosystems. Most people likely don’t want to throw out perfectly good food – but there are just a lot of things we don’t realize are, in fact, perfectly good food.

Take chickpea water, for example. Typically you would open the can, drain the water, and use the chickpeas as you please. But the reality is that’s a total waste. As it turns out, chickpea water, which is also known as aquafaba, is kind of a miracle ingredient. It mimics eggs in baking, so much so that one can make vegan meringues with it! When you consider that meringues are made of just egg whites and sugar, you realize what a feat this is.

The story is similar when it comes to pineapples. Although the skin and the spiky top aren’t exactly edible, the core totally is. It may not have the exact same succulent texture of the rest of the fruit, but it is still delicious and better yet, it’s where some of pineapple’s most impressive nutrients are hiding. Pineapple is the source of bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme (one that breaks down protein), that is a great boon for digestion. And you know where you find bromelain in a pineapple? It’s core.

The point is there are a lot of perfectly good food parts that most people just throw away. To see more great examples, have a look right here. READ MORE
