The Allure of the Unknown

These 50 photos brilliantly captured humanity’s deep space fantasies

They say all of us humans are essentially made up of stardust. Perhaps that explains why us Earthlings are so fascinated by space travel. Its traces can be found in all areas of culture, from urban design and art to music and movies.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, Vice’s Jon Feinstein selected a collection of wonderful images capturing our deep space fantasies. While this collection of images is unlikely to unlock the secrets of the galaxy, the future of space travel, or how to discern a certain president’s May 2019 tweet that the moon is part of Mars, it serves as an entertaining and sometimes critical extension into what lies above and beyond. Speak Up

Three ways to be heard at work when you’re naturally introverted

There are distinct benefits to being both an extrovert and an introvert. But when you lean more toward the quieter side, it can be challenging to make sure your voice is heard, especially at work. Speaking up as an introvert can be stressful, but there are tips that can help you use your voice in a way that feels comfortable and optimal for you. Here are a few, as recommended by clinical psychologists Michael Alcée and author Jennifer B. Kahnweiler.

First tip: write down your ideas first. Introverts tend to process a lot, and Alcée says that it can be helpful to write down your thoughts before a meeting. That way, you can allow yourself the space to clarify your ideas first, so you’re then more comfortable presenting them to others.

Second tip: guard your alone time. Because introverts tend to be more introspective, it’s helpful to carve out time during the day to let your thoughts percolate and recenter yourself. That alone time is “preparation time.” By taking the time to be alone during the day, you can feel more ready to speak up when you’re in a crowd, or even in a one-on-one meeting with your manager.

Third tip: be open about the way you communicate. There’s no shame in being a quieter person, so there’s no reason not to be upfront and direct about it — which is why Kahnweiler suggests telling your colleagues that you’re more introverted. Jumping into a conversation can perhaps be overwhelming at first, so letting the group know that you’re quieter right off the bat can help you feel more comfortable in the room. Then you can ease your way in. READ MORE

Want to go to space? Here’s what you need to know

Most of us would have never imagined traveling to outer space in our lives, but these days, it’s looking ever more possible for the average Joe to go into orbit—or at least, an average Joe with bags of money.

This month, Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic announced it is going public and is preparing to send its first customers into space within a year. More than 600 people have placed deposits topping $80 million in total thus far, while another 2,500 want to get in line. Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin is also keen to send people into space, while Elon Musk announced last year that his company, SpaceX, has a customer lined up who will pay to fly around the moon. On top of that, NASA made a change in policy and said it would allow space tourists to visit the International Space Station as soon as next year.

At the moment it seems space, the final frontier “where no man has gone before”, may soon be full of humans casually passing by with cameras and intergalactic passports. If you’re keen to get in on the action, here’s everything you need to know to become a potential space explorer. READ MORE

How science fiction continues to shape real technology today

If you ever watch Star Trek, you’ll notice something very interesting: the wristwatch they used in the show has many remarkable similarities to today’s smartphones and smart watches. This isn’t the only instance where science fiction later became science fact. In 1945, long before the first satellite orbited Earth, Arthur C. Clarke famously described how radio signals could bounce off satellites for long-distance communication. Today, communications satellites are common.

It’s no secret that science fiction has played a role in the creation of new technologies, but quantifying the impact is hard to quantify. Indeed, technologists would love to better understand the way fiction influences the development of new technologies. Today, that is beginning to look possible thanks to the work of Philipp Jordan at the University of Hawaii in the US and a few colleagues. These folks have studied the way researchers involved in human-computer interaction use science fiction in their work. And they find not only that science fiction plays a significant role, but that its impact is on the increase. So, in what areas of science will science fiction play a role in development?

According to the researchers, one is for theoretical design research. Another is to refer to and explore new forms of human-computer interaction, which researchers increasingly think is shaped by science fiction books and films. And there is the study of human body modification, which is perhaps best explored via the medium of fiction.

To get a more detailed look into the intertwining relationship between science and science fiction, check out the research right here. READ MORE

Good News for the Ocean

Over 600 divers in Florida just set the record for biggest underwater cleanup

It’s amazing what people will do to break a Guinness World Record. Just this past weekend, for example, hundreds of scuba divers entered the waters of Deerfield Beach in Florida for the largest underwater cleanup the world has ever seen.

The previous record was reportedly set in 2015 by a group of 614 divers in the Red Sea. This time around, a team of 633 divers took part in a two hour cleanup of the coast. To break the record, divers entered the ocean in groups and had to stay in the water for at least 15 minutes.

The amount of rubbish collected has not yet been measured officially, but apparently, divers retrieved 1,600 pounds of lead fishing weights alone, the result of years of anglers cutting their lines free. If one underwater cleanup can retrieve that much waste, hopefully, another cleanup will beat the record soon. READ MORE
