The Multitasking Fungi

Posted on August 22, 2019

This compostable packaging for mushrooms is made out of…mushrooms

Packaging made from mushrooms, for mushrooms, is being tested in the hope that it will keep the fungi fresher longer. Christchurch mushroom grower, Meadow Mushrooms, is trialing the packaging it has developed and made from mushroom stalks, for its own products.

The 50-year-old family business worked with Plant and Food Research and the Biopolymer Network to develop the punnet prototypes that have been designed to be breathable, keeping the mushrooms fresh. The packaging also takes on a mushroom’s ability to absorb water, which allows the packaging to absorb moisture from its surroundings, like from a refrigerator, without losing its structural strength.

Beyond packaging mushrooms, the material has also been trialed for use in disposable cups and plates, and it could even be used to package other produce. The hope is to get this mushroom-based packaging out on the market sometime late next year. READ MORE

In Praise of the Humble Mushroom

Posted on August 22, 2019

We finally see mushrooms for what they really are: guardians of our ecosystems

Benefitting both the body and mind, mushrooms are one of the most under-appreciated things on Earth—so much so that we’ve dedicated the week to them. Sunday’s Optimist View covered how psychedelic mushrooms can be used to resolve mental health issues, but we also want to let you know everything else there is to know about mushrooms.

For instance, did you know there are likely 1.5 million different species of fungi on earth? Or were you aware that mushrooms used to be seen as a low-calorie food with little nutritional benefit? We know more about mushrooms now than ever—and while they are indeed low in fat, sodium, and carbohydrates, they are high in vitamin D, potassium and antioxidants. In short, mushrooms are increasingly recognized as nutritional powerhouses.

Because of this, the demand for a wide variety of mushrooms has shot up. And while it’s a good thing that more people are eating mushrooms, scientists are alarmed because the demand for mushrooms is being linked to a decline in the numbers and diversity of mushroom fruiting bodies in traditional centers of high consumption, such as Europe and Japan.

This trend is a serious concern for scientists, who are continuously learning more about the important ecological roles that fungi play. Some form relationships with plant roots that sustain the growth of native forests and commercial tree plantations. As decomposers, fungi also recycle nutrients from the dead matter in many different types of habitats.

It’s concerning that mushroom diversity may be in decline, but the fact that we’re aware of this says something. It tells us that humans are finally starting to see fungi not just as commodities or as biological organisms, but also as important contributors to ecosystem function that are worthy of conservation. Beating the Burnout

Posted on August 21, 2019

How to Get Back in the College Groove Without Losing Your Mind

With the start of fall semester right around the corner, college students may soon be facing an awful enemy: burnout. Burnout is that feeling of defeat, the “there’s no point in doing this anymore” and “my life is going nowhere”.

While college can be the best days of someone’s life and will leave students with valuable degrees, burnout can be very hard to beat. Here are five tips to help students manage school stress and avoid negative feelings:

Understand why you are in college. Do you love what you study? Do you have a dream job? Intrinsic motivation will help students keep pushing forward even when the textbooks and exams are holding them back.
Stay organized! Use to-do lists, assignment books, and course syllabi to track your progress. Don’t be afraid to reward yourself for even small accomplishments.
Instead of cramming and sleeping in the library, do a little bit every day. Spreading out study time can help you better learn and maximize your time.
Breaks are good, I promise. Even if it feels like you should just keep going, that will not be productive. Eating, exercising, and simply breathing will help you stay on track and maintain focus.
The end is in sight, and it looks great. Leaving college with a degree will give you the life for which you’ve been working. You will gain invaluable skills and memories to last a lifetime. READ MORE

The Future of Leather

Posted on August 21, 2019

Meat from Plants, Milk from Oats, and Leather from Mushrooms!

Leather has been worn for centuries and remains an iconic material for fashion today. But leather is not perfect. It requires livestock which requires many resources and the foul treatment of animals and produces millions of tons of waste per year. The word “leather” is quickly becoming revolutionized with faux leather taking the lead, and mushrooms can take that a step further.

While synthetic leathers are often plastic-based, mushroom leather is perfectly sustainable. Mushrooms are very strong and can be grown in versatile conditions, and the end product, “mushroom leather”, is even waterproof. With 2020 right around the corner, it’s time for fungi fashion to take the lead in the leather industry. READ MORE

Learn to Love Veggies

Posted on August 20, 2019

New research suggests you can ‘reprogram’ your taste buds to like vegetables

Even if you’ve tried a certain food a few times and didn’t find it tasty, that doesn’t mean you’ll never learn to enjoy that food. In fact, according to new research, repeated exposure to bitter foods can change the proteins in your saliva, essentially calming the initial distaste for bitter and other flavors.

Bitter is the key word here, especially considering that bitter vegetables such as broccoli, kale, and radishes are the closest thing we have to actual superfoods and should be a staple of any healthy eater’s diet. So, if your child or partner is a stubborn eater who neglects broccoli, don’t lose hope. Be persistent and they might just wind up loving broccoli. READ MORE
