Healthy Rivalry

Posted on September 11, 2019

Your worst enemy may just be your biggest motivation

What does your worst enemy have in common with your drive to be your best, most successful self? Everything! Turns out, that person who pushes you the wrong way– your nemesis or rival or whatever villainous name you have given them– can actually be a driving force to help you reach a greater potential.

You can use the negative energy of the rivalry to harness the power of competition. You can find inspiration in their success, opportunity that pushes you to do better – to do the impossible. Traits you dislike in others may reveal information about yourself such as your strengths, weaknesses, and motivations. When someone is evoking such strong emotions in your heart, even negative ones, it is possible to use them as a means to improve yourself in terms of achievement, confidence, effectiveness, and happiness.

There is something beautiful about finding the positive in the negative, even if that negative is the single person you cannot bear to be around for more than 30 seconds at a time. We are always looking for ways to better ourselves, and growing from the nuisances in our lives is a great path to success. READ MORE

Happy Teeth

It could soon be possible for your damaged tooth to repair itself

Enamel may be the hardest tissue in the body, but once it’s damaged, it cannot self-repair. The good news is scientists have discovered a method by which its complex structure can be reproduced, essentially allowing the enamel to grow back. In studies thus far, the repaired enamel has been found to have similar strength and wear-resistance to natural, undamaged enamel.

At present, materials such as resin, metal alloys, amalgam, and ceramics are used to repair damaged tooth enamel but they are not ideal. The team behind the research say the new material is not only safe but also cheap and can be prepared on a large-scale. That’s important, especially considering about 2.4 billion people worldwide live with decaying teeth, READ MORE

Positive words linked to positive outcomes as we grow older

Aging is often associated with unpleasant side effects: achy joints, forgetfulness, limited mobility. But one technique that has proven to make a difference and improve the lived experience of growing older is “positivity”. Psychologist Becca Levy studies the correlation between attitudes towards aging and symptoms of seniority and has found that positivity is linked to improved emotional and even physical wellbeing in those over 65.

In her research, Levy subliminally exposed subjects to either negative words, such as “decline” and “decrepit” or positive words, such as “sage” and “accomplished.” After only a few weeks, the patients given positive reinforcement experienced better physical health in comparison to those in the negative or neutral test groups.

On a larger scale, this theory applies to how we view the elderly in general. Ageism, or negative prejudice towards the aging, is especially prevalent in Western cultures where we tend to see our elders as less competent. These negative attitudes about aging are pervasive, and as we ourselves age, we apply these stereotypes to ourselves as well, leading to more negative outcomes. Changing the narrative to use more positive associations with aging has tangible benefits to both the youngsters and the elders in our midst.

It will come as no surprise to readers of the Optimist Daily, but the words we use to describe ourselves, or people around us, can have either positive or deleterious effects. This article was shared with us by an Optimist Emissary, and despite being a few weeks old, we thought it was good enough to share! READ MORE

Embrace the Optimistic

Posted on September 9, 2019

A huge study just found optimism can help you lead a longer, healthier life

We’re not alone in believing in the power of optimism. In a comprehensive new study, scientists found that individuals with greater optimism are more likely to live longer and to achieve “exceptional longevity”—that is, living to age 85 or older. By optimism, the scientists are referring to a general expectation that good things will happen or believing that the future will be favorable because we can control important outcomes.

The study uses survey data collected from 69,744 women and 1,429 men. Both groups completed survey questions to assess their level of optimism, as well as their overall health and habits, such as diet, smoking, and alcohol use. Researchers followed the women for 10 years and the men for 30 years.

When they compared individuals based on their initial levels of optimism, the researchers found that the most optimistic men and women demonstrated, on average, an 11% to 15% longer life span, and had 50% to 70% greater odds of reaching 85 years of age compared to the least optimistic groups.

The results held after researchers accounted for age, demographic factors, such as educational attainment, chronic diseases, and depression, and health behaviors, such as alcohol use, exercise, diet, and primary care visits. Although it’s a bit unclear how exactly optimism helps people attain a longer life, it does strengthen the case for bringing more optimism into our day-to-day lives. READ MORE

Time Out

Posted on September 9, 2019

How taking a break can reinvigorate creativity and boost productivity

In today’s world, we have created a culture where to be constantly productive is equivalent to being successful. We apologize over lunch with a friend when the cell vibrates, as if being always available for work or other “emergencies” means we really do matter. Even if it also means we just sacrificed those five minutes of face to face relating with someone we care about.

However, in a society where being busy is equated with success, some are calling for a “time out” and a return to slowness. Our last Optimist View discussed this movement in higher education, but slowness is equally valid in other areas of life.

Taking time to nap, walk, read, or meditate between big projects will not cause your productivity to dwindle, but rather will reboot your mental energy to create even higher quality work in the future. As this lovely source article argues, “Thinking is working too.”

So next time you finish a big task, take a moment to rest and reflect before diving into the next project. You may be surprised to find improved caliber in what you create. READ MORE
