7 things you can do to create a more fulfilling work-life now that summer is over

By marking the traditional end of summer, Labor Day is in many ways its own type of New Year moment. It marks the time that we head back to school and back to full work schedules after summer breaks and vacations. This September, as you celebrate the work you do in your life, why not take time to ask yourself how you can be happier, more creative, and more successful?

This week, we have 7 strategies offered by happiness expert Gretchen Rubin to help you head into fall with purpose and passion for the work you do. The full details are in the source article (from Mindbodygreen), but here are the headlines for all 7 tips:

Tackle a nagging task
Choose a one-word theme for your work goals
Clean your desk
Create outer accountability for a habit you want to change at work.
Find a common activity to do with your co-workers
Ask yourself: Whom do I envy?
Think, how can I make my life bigger?
To read Gretchen Rubin’s full description on how each step might help you focus your work-life in the new “labor” year, boost your productivity and set the tone for a more rewarding season, click on the source article link. READ MORE

Feeling bored at work?

Posted on September 4, 2019

Here’s what science says you should and shouldn’t do

There are plenty of ways you can cure the boredom you feel at work, but not all of them are wise. For instance, watching something on Netflix would fall under the category of “not wise”. According to a new paper that will soon be published in Current Directions in Psychological Science, there’s a better, wiser solution to fixing boredom: finding a way to make your work more interesting.

If the problem at hand is that your work doesn’t feel meaningful, you may be able to reengage by locating a sense of purpose outside your immediate job description. Yale professor of management, Amy Wrzesniewski, calls this approach “job crafting”. For example, she found in one study that hospital janitors were deeply satisfied with their work because they understood their primary purpose as engaging with the patients whose rooms they cleaned, and they acted accordingly.

Mentally reframing the task at hand as a game can also pay dividends. The game? Find ways to appreciate and value whatever it that we’re being paid to do. Another strategy is to make a given task less boring by adding a layer of challenge—say, setting a timer to speed through a pile of paperwork or deciding to write an otherwise run-of-the-mill memo in the form of a sonnet.

Whatever it may be that you do to cure your boredom, just don’t choose pleasurable entertainment such as Netflix. Research tells us it will only increase the chances that we’ll be bored more often. READ MORE

Speak Up

Posted on July 25, 2019

Three ways to be heard at work when you’re naturally introverted

There are distinct benefits to being both an extrovert and an introvert. But when you lean more toward the quieter side, it can be challenging to make sure your voice is heard, especially at work. Speaking up as an introvert can be stressful, but there are tips that can help you use your voice in a way that feels comfortable and optimal for you. Here are a few, as recommended by clinical psychologists Michael Alcée and author Jennifer B. Kahnweiler.

First tip: write down your ideas first. Introverts tend to process a lot, and Alcée says that it can be helpful to write down your thoughts before a meeting. That way, you can allow yourself the space to clarify your ideas first, so you’re then more comfortable presenting them to others.

Second tip: guard your alone time. Because introverts tend to be more introspective, it’s helpful to carve out time during the day to let your thoughts percolate and recenter yourself. That alone time is “preparation time.” By taking the time to be alone during the day, you can feel more ready to speak up when you’re in a crowd, or even in a one-on-one meeting with your manager.

Third tip: be open about the way you communicate. There’s no shame in being a quieter person, so there’s no reason not to be upfront and direct about it — which is why Kahnweiler suggests telling your colleagues that you’re more introverted. Jumping into a conversation can perhaps be overwhelming at first, so letting the group know that you’re quieter right off the bat can help you feel more comfortable in the room. Then you can ease your way in. READ MORE

6 steps to overcome your stuffed email inbox after vacation

After a vacation, nothing says “welcome back to reality” like a stuffed email inbox. To spare you the post-vacation blues that come with a jam-packed inbox, here are a few tips on how to conquer your email after vacation.

First tip: keep your auto-responder on. Whether or not you take an extra day off work to recover, you should spend your first day back pretending you’re still away. Keep an auto-responder on, and imply (or flatly lie) that you’re unreachable on your first day back. When you actually do reply to some emails today, no one is going to get mad that you were surprisingly responsive.

Second tip: clear out all the newsletters first. No time for newsletters when you’re conquering your inbox.

Third tip: send a quick reply to buy more time. Some emails require a long reply, or significant work before you can archive them. To lower your stress, and the stress of the people waiting for you, send a quick “Working on this!” email. Just one line to let them know that you’re still paying attention. This also helps you avoid stupid follow-up emails that are “just checking in!”

Fourth tip: snooze all non-urgent mail. Now that you’ve made some quick replies, use the “snooze” function on Gmail or Boomerang to hide those emails until a specified date. You can stagger them out, so just a few emails resurface each day, giving you some time to catch up.

Fifth tip: work top-down. By now you should have only the most important, urgent emails in your inbox. These are the emails that actually take some work. Instead of cherry-picking which ones to do, start from the top and work you’re way down. If an email seems intimidating to handle, ask yourself if you could better tackle it over the phone, or turn it into a note for an upcoming meeting.

Last tip: Once you’ve worked back to the date you left, stop. Give yourself a break and get back to the less-urgent emails later. READ MORE

Embrace Boredom

Posted on July 10, 2019

Why boredom at work isn’t always so bad for you

No matter how much you love your job, at some point, boredom is bound to sneak into your work. A dull conference presentation numbs the mind in even the most exotic of settings. If you’re an academic, even a famous one, you still will have paperwork – and tedium to deal with. If you work for Uber or Lyft, you might get stuck in hours-long waits at airports.

But boredom isn’t all bad, according to a newer study. In a clever study, researchers found that being bored led people to generate more ideas, as compared to a control group that was not bored. The study discovered that boredom seems to prompt individuals to explore alternative solutions to problems or to “challenge the status quo.”

The researchers also asserted that “without the innate ability to experience boredom, human beings would be less compelled to move out of their comfort zones and seek different, and sometimes better, circumstances.” The ultimate takeaway for today’s earthbound employees is to at least stop being afraid of downtime and to develop an appreciation for routine tasks that you might otherwise feel are beneath you.
