Kick the AC Habit

How to keep your home cool without using air conditioning

We all want a cool home when the hot summer months arrive, but using the air-conditioning wastes a lot of energy. Not to mention it can cost a fortune to keep the air-conditioning on. To save yourself some money and the planet, here are a few ways to keep your home chill without flipping on the AC.

First, open the windows. Creating a cross-breeze is one of the most effective ways to cool a home. The key to effective breeze cooling is figuring out which direction the wind blows. In some areas, it’s fairly consistent, commonly coming from the same direction during the same times each day (most often in the afternoon). Open up windows during that “window” of a breeze to encourage the flow through your home.

Using blinds is another way to keep your home cool. When your windows are closed, blinds can help stop heat from entering the home through your windows.

Another effective strategy to keep the sun from injecting blistering heat into a room is to keep it dark. Completely close off rooms when they are not being used. If you don’t mind being left in the dark, install blackout curtains, which effectively block the heat from entering the room through the window. Both ceiling fans and box fans are useful for cooling space without cranking up the energy bill. To create even cooler air, place a container of ice directly in front of the fan. The air from the fan will bounce off the ice and direct the cool air across the room.

If you’re keen to learn more ways to chill your house without using air-conditioning, have a look right here. READ MORE

Are You Ready For Summer?

4 simple ways to feel at your absolute best this summer

The sunshine of summer is enough to make you feel better than you usually do throughout the year. But with a few changes to your daily habits, you can feel at your absolute best throughout the summer. Without further ado, here are four simple ways to optimize your health during the hottest months of the year.

First, make sure to eat anti-inflammatory foods. Inflammation is at the root of many health conditions and can bring down your energy. To avoid inflammation, eat real, homemade food. Not weak salads that leave you vulnerable to a blood sugar crash in the afternoon, but “regular” food that’s boosted with anti-inflammatory tricks. Try more vegetables of all kinds, preferably four different kinds with four different colors. How about a rainbow of vegetables and berries every day? Blueberries, purple eggplant, red onion, green spinach, yellow peppers, orange carrots, red tomatoes, and all other colors. Vegetables, with their various polyphenols, act directly or indirectly (researchers are investigating this) as protective mechanisms for the plants, and we humans can “borrow” their effects to protect ourselves.

The next you’ll want to do is lower your sugar intake. A first step is to get rid of all the sugary junk in the refrigerator, freezer, and pantry such as ice cream and soda. Another method is to figure out a new standard breakfast, which will probably be different from the way you used to eat. Breakfast buffets with bread, orange juice, sugary fruit yogurt, “regular” high-lactose milk, processed cereal, and marmalade—goodbye! Many of these products will give you a blood sugar rush or create other types of inflammation. Instead, go for a breakfast that focuses on protein, fat, vegetables, and fruit.

Beyond diet, exercise is another effective way to decrease inflammation and boost your energy this summer. Aim to exercise a little every day, but vary the length and intensity. And even when you don’t feel like it, you can at least try 10 minutes.

Lastly, take time to de-stress. A moment of deep breathing and meditation decreases inflammation. So take the time to breathe deeply, meditate, practice yoga—whatever you need to do to feel relaxed. And of course, make sure to get enough sleep! READ MORE

Paradise Pounds

This simple trick can help you avoid weight gain on your next vacation

It’s summertime, and the livin’ is easy. Perhaps a bit too easy if you’re going on a relaxing vacation with nothing better to do but lounge all day. Yes, a relaxing getaway can be a great way to spend your summer vacation, but if you plan to take it easy and indulge in delicious food, don’t be surprised if you come home with a few extra pounds. Want to avoid that? No problem.

Researchers from the University of Georgia have discovered a simple trick that can help stop you from gaining weight while away on a trip. In a study, the researchers found that people who weigh themselves daily during times when they may be more likely to indulge — the holidays and vacations, for example — will more successfully maintain their weight or even lose some compared to people who don’t dare step on the scales.

We get it if you don’t want to step on the scale every day while you’re on vacation. Who would? But perhaps it’s something to keep in mind if you’re keen on avoiding weight gain during vacation. READ MORE

Suitcase Essentials for Summertime Fun

Summer.

The word brings images of hot weather, cool beaches, and vacations. Kids are excited to enjoy the freedom that comes with the end of their school year and, hopefully, an awesome family vacation. June is also the most popular month for weddings, which means brides and grooms everywhere are looking forward to their upcoming honeymoons.

Regardless of which category you fall into, bags are getting packed, and much needed trips are being planned. Necessities need to be remembered. We recommend creating a list so that nothing important is forgotten at the last minute. It’s also important you know what items are permitted and prohibited by TSA. There’s often a big difference between what you’re allowed to carry on and what must be checked. Click HERE for the complete list of what items go where.

Most of us have become savvy enough travelers (Or we’ve watched Meet the Parents) to realize that all your essentials should go in your carry on. There’s less likelihood of it getting lost or left behind. Isn’t it great that Aloe Cadabra just happens to come in 2.5 oz. bottles with nondescript labels? Parents, newly marrieds, and lovers from everywhere can pack a bottle to help enhance their vacation and not concern themselves with what fellow travelers or airport security might think. In fact, there’s a strong chance that someone will think the bottle is to treat sunburn!

Pssst! By the way, it CAN treat sunburn. In fact, according to one of our followers, it can even treat bug bites. Check out this Tweet we received yesterday! What’s the most unique use of Aloe Cadabra that you’ve discovered? Tweet us with your discoveries and we’ll share them.

Found another use for @AloeCadabra today! My dog got bitten by a bug. Research said rub some aloe on it, so I tried you guys! 😉
