Stop overthinking. Start enjoying.

Here are 5 tips for doing just that

The people over at the online publication, Greatist, offer a lot of clever ways to deal with the little things in life. Earlier this year, writer Susie Moore wrote a little piece about how to stop overthinking everything and find more joy in life. Here are her 5 top tips to doing just that.

First tip: Imagine 2019 is your last year to live. What are three things you’d make non-negotiable: spending time with your parents? Writing that book? Visiting the Grand Canyon? Sitting down to have an intimate talk that you’ve been putting off? Make them real!

Second tip: Risk more in your routine. Can you test a new recipe you’ve always wanted to try and not be married to the outcome? Just give it a whirl with an open, curious mind? If it’s good, great! If not, how bad can it be? What’s the worst that can happen? The point is, don’t be afraid to change up your routine—you might be pleasantly surprised.

Third tip: Sign up for something new. Can you show up for a new workout without being embarrassed? Every expert was once a beginner, and even the triathlon pros had to learn to ride a bike and swim. People aren’t watching, don’t worry (they’re too focused on themselves). Most classes have beginner options too—including barre, Zumba, SLT!

Fourth tip: Make something you’ve always wanted to do a priority instead of leaving it on the back burner. It can be anything. Can you ditch the reason that’s stopping you, and just book that trip to India? Try cryotherapy? Go trapezing? What are you waiting for, exactly?

Fifth tip: cleanse yourself of perfectionist tendencies. Expect nothing. Or expect awful. Anything above awful can be a bonus. When you take yourself a little less seriously, ideas and creativity will flow a whole lot better. READ MORE

Embrace Joy

How to stop letting worry interfere with your moments of triumph

Do you find yourself waiting for the other shoe to drop in times of joy? Many of us are guilty of worrying even when things are going well in our lives. However, recent research has found that fully experiencing your emotions of joy can help you cope more effectively with times of distress. Sonja Lyubomirsky, a psychologist at the University of California-Riverside, says that positive emotions do not set you up for disappointment, but rather can actually help you achieve your goals and desires by ameliorating your outlook on what you hope to accomplish.

There are simple steps to help yourself savor the good moments without dwelling on the potential bad. Focusing on your values, finding pride in your accomplishments, and noticing when you are spiraling into a hole of worry will all help you come to terms with the reality that a balanced life is a healthy life, and loving the good moments is productive and well deserved, not naive. Beating the Burnout

How to Get Back in the College Groove Without Losing Your Mind

With the start of fall semester right around the corner, college students may soon be facing an awful enemy: burnout. Burnout is that feeling of defeat, the “there’s no point in doing this anymore” and “my life is going nowhere”.

While college can be the best days of someone’s life and will leave students with valuable degrees, burnout can be very hard to beat. Here are five tips to help students manage school stress and avoid negative feelings:

Understand why you are in college. Do you love what you study? Do you have a dream job? Intrinsic motivation will help students keep pushing forward even when the textbooks and exams are holding them back.
Stay organized! Use to-do lists, assignment books, and course syllabi to track your progress. Don’t be afraid to reward yourself for even small accomplishments.
Instead of cramming and sleeping in the library, do a little bit every day. Spreading out study time can help you better learn and maximize your time.
Breaks are good, I promise. Even if it feels like you should just keep going, that will not be productive. Eating, exercising, and simply breathing will help you stay on track and maintain focus.
The end is in sight, and it looks great. Leaving college with a degree will give you the life for which you’ve been working. You will gain invaluable skills and memories to last a lifetime. READ MORE

Keep Showing Up

Posted on July 23, 2019

How to keep your relationship healthy during times of stress

When we’re feeling a high level of stress, our brain’s prefrontal cortex goes offline, hijacking our capacity to think clearly and limiting our ability to solve problems. Especially in relationships, stress can bring the worst out of us and make us too focused on ourselves. This can leave both partners feeling alone and disconnected, amplifying an already stressful situation. To maintain your relationship, you need to keep showing up for yourself and teach your partner how to show up for you. The following four steps will teach you how to do just that.

First, be extra diligent about communicating your needs during this time. Tune into yourself first to see what it is you might be needing during a stressful time. Do you want your partner to just listen, or do you want them to engage in problem-solving with you? Do you want a hug, do you need space? Be specific about the behavior you need. Then when you’re feeling less stressed, find out what your partner might need when they’re dealing with stress. The tables will turn at some point.

Secondly, touch your partner. Physical touch releases oxytocin, the cuddle hormone, which helps calm our nervous systems and promotes well-being. Touch between romantic partners is so powerful it can even provide relief from physical pain.

Next, don’t put all your eggs in one relational basket. We need our partners the most during stressful periods, but it’s important to recognize that support can also come from others. One critical way to protect your relationship is to lean on friends and family members who you trust with your vulnerability, especially if your partner is also caught in stress.

Lastly, keep showing up for yourself. This means being compassionate to yourself and finding stress reduction strategies that work for you when you’re alone, whether it’s meditating, exercising, or just making sure you get enough sleep. Finally, remember that you’re not alone with what you’re feeling. Everyone experiences stress sometimes, and there are other people in the world who feel the same as you right now. READ MORE

Avoid the Slump

Feeling fatigued? These lifestyle changes will bring you new energy

Fatigue is the enemy of productivity and just about anything that requires movement. It has long been thought that fatigue is something that comes about with age, but experts are starting to rethink the idea that fatigue is, in fact, not an expected part of aging at all. A closer look into our own lives shows us fatigue can come from anywhere: from depression, stress, and boredom to medications like antihistamines or beta blockers. And then there is deconditioning, which basically means you’re out of shape, leading you to feel more fatigued.

If your fatigue is caused be a serious health condition, then that obviously that needs to be addressed. But if it’s not, then there are some changes you can make in your lifestyle to ward off fatigue.

The first thing you can do is increase activity. For fatigue caused by inactivity and/or deconditioning, bumping up the movement can help a lot. You don’t have to go out and try to run a marathon; take it easy, just focus on getting up more, walking, gardening, taking the stairs, et cetera.

If you’re trying to limit fatigue, you should also keep track of what you eat and drink. You should especially watch out for high-sugar and fried food, as well as alcohol and caffeine. And while you’re at it, try some fatigue-fighting snacks like edamame, melons, and nuts. These are all packed with vitamins, nutrients, and minerals that are known to boost and maintain one’s energy.

Boredom can be another source of fatigue—one that works like a vicious circle. If you’re bored, it can add to fatigue, which makes it harder to fight the boredom, which makes one feel more fatigued – you see where this is going. To fight boredom, tap into your interests and explore the options: Find a new hobby or resume an old one, join or start a group or club, or just get more involved in the community.

Lastly, improve your sleep to fight fatigue. While fatigue isn’t always caused by too little sleep, improved sleep duration and quality for those who struggle is a good place to start. READ MORE
