How to lower your blood pressure naturally

People who suffer from high blood pressure typically show no signs or symptoms, earning it the not-so-cheerful nickname of the “silent killer.” It’s also extremely common: about 75 million adults in the US are affected by high blood pressure. That’s around 1 in 3 adults. So, how do you combat high blood pressure?

According to Dr. Michael Greger of NutritionFacts.org, high cholesterol, which is typically caused by eating meat, dairy, and eggs, is the primary cause of high blood pressure, although feeling stressed, smoking tobacco, and having high-stress levels can also play a role. Therefore, the most effective way to naturally lower high blood pressure is by changing up your diet and lifestyle.

Eating more plant-based meals and focusing on “whole foods” that are free from processing can drastically improve your blood pressure. Whole foods (not the store) include fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and beans.

Reducing sodium intake is another thing you should do if you want to lower blood pressure. When you eat too much salt, it can cause the muscles of your artery walls to become stronger and thicker, meaning there is less space in the arteries, therefore further raising your blood pressure.

Beyond diet, regular physical activity for 30 minutes most days of the week can significantly lower your blood pressure. Not only that, but exercising (especially combined with a healthy plant-based diet) can also help you lose weight, which can also help lower blood pressure.

Lastly, cut back a bit on alcohol, caffeine, and cigarettes—all of which are known to significantly raise blood pressure levels.

Another Meat Free Option!

McDonald’s has finally given in to plant-based meat trend

Over the last couple of months, we have seen numerous fast-food chains embracing the idea of plant-based food items. Burger King now has the ‘Impossible Whopper”, Subway has “Beyond meatballs”, and even KFC launched its “Beyond Fried Chicken”, which caused a frenzied reaction from the crowd upon its launch.

Surprisingly, one of the few chains to hold back from the plant-based craze of the couple months has been fast-food giant McDonald’s. McDonald’s initially held back from rolling out its own meatless burger, waiting for the trend to be substantiated with actual long term interest from customers. It now seems that fast-food meatless options are here to stay, considering McDonald’s is finally caving to the trend and will start rolling out its own Beyond Meat burger patty.

The new food option, named the “P.L.T.” (Plant. Lettuce. Tomato.), will be tested in Ontario, Canada for 12 weeks. This small roll out from McDonald’s will serve to test the P.L.T., with further plans to expand if the initial rollout is successful. With meatless patties tasting more and more like actual meat, it’s expected that the item can attract both meat and non-meat eaters. Hopefully, it will spur people to ditch the meat options altogether.

The Next Alt-Animal Product

A new product is swimming into the world of plant based meat alternatives

Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat introduced the world to alt meat that tastes, feels, and even bleeds like the real deal. Now, a new product is swimming into the alternative meat market: plant-based shrimp. Created by the San Francisco based company, New Wave, the product mirrors the flavors and texture of the world’s most popular seafood. Tyson Foods is a prominent investor in the start-up and hopes the seaweed-infused product will capture the attention of chefs who often struggle to price shrimp on menus due to its volatile market cost.

As opposed to burgers, which are often adorned with condiments, shrimp recipes typically have fewer complementary flavors to distract the consumer, and New Wave says creating alternative meat able to stand alone in terms of flavor and consistency was the main concern. This successful jump into the alternative shellfish market opens up new doors in the world of meat substitution and could pave the way for even more varieties of environment-friendly alt-animal products. If even the world’s most unique flavors and textures of shrimp can be replicated in a plant-based and economically efficient way, the potential for other alternatives could be jumbo.

Guilt-free pizza?

Little Caesars becomes the latest chain to put plant-based meat on the menu

The first time news broke out about a fast food chain offering menu items made with faux meat rather than real meat, the news was shocking and exciting. Now it seems it’s simply becoming the norm as yet another restaurant chain has announced that it will be adding plant-based meat to their menus.

Little Caesars, a national pizza chain, will soon be the first restaurant to sell a meat-free sausage, which was created by the company behind the plant-based Impossible Burger. The meat-free sausage is made of very similar ingredients to the company’s existing burger, and still relies on heme from soy plants for its meaty flavor. However, Impossible Foods says it’s removed the potato protein to give the sausage a more springy texture. Little Caesars has already started offering meat-free sausage as a pizza topping at 58 restaurants in the US.
If the initial pilot is successful, the sausage could be made available more widely by the end of the year.

For all of us, it may not be so spectacular that a pizza chain is selling plant-based meat, but it’s just another sign that the market for eco-friendly meat alternatives is on the up. READ MORE
