You can teach your brain to stop being mad at someone

The roots of anger stem often stem from the emotional response one has when denied or blocked from achieving their goals. When an individual is the source of that blockage, that anger is focused directly on that person. An animal can convert that anger into intensive energy when it approaches its foe, but in our modern world where our goals are mostly conceptual, no amount of physical force can help us solve our problems. Built-up anger is mentally draining, so here’s how to teach yourself to stop being mad at someone.   READ MORE

Self-healing fabric is the future of protective clothing

Self-repairing clothing is something parents could only dream of, but scientists have actually figured out to make this happen for protective clothing. To better protect workers who handle hazardous materials, a team of researchers have developed a new fabric coating that promises to neutralize harmful chemicals upon contact and heals its own tears and holes while the clothes go through the laundry. Made from the same self-healing proteins found in the teeth of squid suckers, the coating can fuse two pieces of fabric together like an adhesive when it comes in contact with water. More importantly the fabric coating has enzymes that break down chemicals before they reach the skin, which could be useful for farmers who come in contact with common pesticides or scientists working with hazardous chemicals.    READ MORE

Using solar power to turn saltwater into drinkable water

Using solar power to turn saltwater into drinkable waterUsing solar power to turn saltwater into drinkable water

Fresh drinking water is increasingly precious. That’s why worldwide hundreds of desalination plants are planned or under way. However, most of them are powered by fossil fuels. At the giant Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park under construction near Dubai, a desalination facility goes into operation this month that will be completely run on solar power. The system will produce about 13,200 gallons of drinking water a day for use on site. That’s insignificant compared with the size of traditional desalination plants elsewhere, but it’s a start and there are more similar projects under development. Turning salt water into drinking water with renewable energy is a critical innovation.   READ MORE

We're better thinkers when we're feeling aweWe’re better thinkers when we’re feeling awe

More than 4.5 million people visited the Grand Canyon in 2013. In the same year, worldwide revenues for Cirque du Soleil were close to $850 million. Fireworks displays, first developed in seventh-century China, are now featured in celebrations throughout the world at tremendous public expense. Why is that? New research shows that natural wonders, grand firework displays, jaw-dropping human abilities and great works of the arts appeal to something fine in human nature—our need to know: We’re better thinkers when we’re feeling awe.   READ MORE
