Erase the Damage

Posted on September 23, 2019

Hydrogel technology could help repair damage caused by heart attacks

Every year hundreds of thousands of Americans suffer a heart attack, with no established treatment for repairing the resulting damage to cardiac tissue. Fortunately, the advent of a recent technological breakthrough in the world of cardiac medicine may soon change that.

Enter VentriGel – an injectable hydrogel that can form a scaffold around the damaged cardiac muscle and encourage the growth of healthy, new cardiac tissue. Once injected in damaged cardiac muscle, VentriGel forms a scaffold that acts as a reparative environment where healthy cells migrate, leading to increases in cardiac muscle, less scar tissue, and improvements in heart function. What’s more, the hydrogel can be easily injected into the heart muscle using a minimally invasive procedure that does not require surgery.

The team now plans a larger, randomized trial that will further evaluate the efficacy of the treatment. READ MORE

Are You Getting Enough of These Heart-Healthy Foods?

Posted on July 10, 2019

Fend off high blood pressure with these 6 foods

Bad news: the number of deaths from high blood pressure is on the rise in America. Good news: in many cases, dietary changes alone are enough to solve the issue. If you’re looking for a natural way to lower your blood pressure, here are six key foods that will help do the trick.

The first food on our list is beet greens, which are super delicious if you chop them and sauté them. Beet greens are rich in magnesium, antioxidants and potassium, a mineral that is known to reduce blood pressure.

Secondly, we have pomegranates. The beautiful thing about pomegranates is that they are high in polyphenols, an antioxidant that benefits those with high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. In one study, people who drank a cup or more of pomegranate juice daily showed a decrease in both systolic (the maximum pressure your heart exerts while beating) and diastolic (the amount of pressure in your arteries between beats) numbers.

Next up: Pistachios, which are members of the cashew family. Pistachios are full of healthy fats, potassium, and other compounds that reduce blood pressure.

Yogurt is another great way to lower blood pressure. One review found a link between low-fat dairy, especially yogurt and milk, and reduced risk of hypertension. In another study, women who ate five or more servings of yogurt a week showed a 20% reduction in their risk for developing high blood pressure.

Fifth on this list is flax seeds. As we mentioned yesterday, flax is high in omega-3 fats. They also contain a lot of fibers, which help protect against high blood pressure.

Lastly, try adding some beets to your diet if blood pressure is an issue. With beets, you get a whole lot of polyphenols and nitric oxide, a compound that reduces inflammation and promotes vasodilation (widening of arteries) to reduce blood pressure. Whether it’s through beet juice or simply by adding slices of beets into your salads, these red roots will help keep the blood pressure low. READ MORE

Sharp decline in cardiac deaths since 1995

Posted on April 5, 2019

rapid decline in heart attacks The amount of people dying from heart attacks sharply declined since 1995

In the 1990s, having a heart attack was basically a death sentence for some 20 percent of the people who suffered one. By 2014, that number fell to just 12 percent. So what led to these significant declines in fatality rates for heart-attack patients? Much of it has to do with a concerted effort on the parts of three national organizations—the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the American College of Cardiology, and the American Heart Association—to spearhead changes in treatment. In the 1990s, the health care community established that aspirin and a class of drugs called beta-blockers (used to reduce blood pressure) were some of the best ways to improve chances of survival after a heart attack. Also over the last 30 years, coronary angioplasty has become more widely available. Physicians use this non-surgical procedure to open arteries that are clogged with a buildup of plaque, thus helping blood flow from the heart. It’s a highly effective way to decrease the risk of mortality, far more so than any medication alone. The researchers also credit lifestyle changes, such as more healthful dieting, for contributing to the decreases in heart-attack hospitalization and mortality rates.    READ MORE

New breakthrough in toilet seat tech

Posted on April 1, 2019

high tech toilet can detect illness Could a high-tech toilet help save people from heart failure?

It may sound extremely odd, but in the future, your toilet could help save your life. At least, that could be the case if a team of researchers at the Rochester Institute of Technology get their way. They have created a “toilet seat-based monitoring system” that could help hospitals monitor patients for risk of congestive heart failure. Integrated into the seat is a device that measures heart rate, blood pressure, and pressure oxygenation levels. Algorithms can take in all that data and notify health practitioners if the patient’s condition deteriorates. The researchers argue that the toilet seat could not only save lives, but it could also save hospital systems hundreds of thousands of dollars by lowering the readmission rate after a subsequent incident.    READ MORE

New study shows diet plays a key role in affecting blood pressure

Posted on December 3, 2018

Diet could play a key role in preventing hypertension Diet could play a key role in preventing hypertension

A remarkable study into the lifestyles of two isolated Amazonian tribes revealed diet is a major factor affecting blood pressure. Scientists observed that the people of one of the studied tribes maintain the same blood pressure throughout their entire lives. Researchers believe that this is due to their consistent diet, which is high in fruit and fiber and very low in fats and salt – a stark contrast to the diet of people within the industrialized world. These findings upend the common belief that age is a direct and inevitable factor leading to hypertension. READ MORE
