Healthy At Any Age

Posted on September 19, 2019

Why it’s never to late to starting working out

At the ripe age of 70, Jim Owen finally came to realize that his successful career on Wall Street was a burden on his health. Not necessarily because of the stress that came with the job, but because he had been sedentary most of the time.

Owen finally began exercising after this realization and completely reclaimed his physical health over the years, even though he was 70 when he kickstarted his new active lifestyle. Now at the age of 79, Owen is as healthy as can be. A new study in the journal, Frontiers in Physiology, backs up what Owen witnessed firsthand: Even if you’ve never worked out regularly and are older, your body has the same ability to build muscle mass.

A team at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom compared the ability of men to build muscle mass. They looked at two groups: People older than 60 who exercised at least twice a week for at least 20 years and those who didn’t have a consistent workout routine. Participants had a muscle biopsy 48 hours before consuming an isotope tracer drink and conducting a weight training session, then another biopsy after finishing. The drink enabled the researchers to see how proteins were developing within the muscle.

The results? Both groups had equal abilities to build muscle in response to exercise—showing it’s never too late to start working out. The researchers do have one caution though: if you’re new to the gym, you might want to start off slowly to avoid injury. READ MORE

Learn to Love Veggies

Posted on August 20, 2019

New research suggests you can ‘reprogram’ your taste buds to like vegetables

Even if you’ve tried a certain food a few times and didn’t find it tasty, that doesn’t mean you’ll never learn to enjoy that food. In fact, according to new research, repeated exposure to bitter foods can change the proteins in your saliva, essentially calming the initial distaste for bitter and other flavors.

Bitter is the key word here, especially considering that bitter vegetables such as broccoli, kale, and radishes are the closest thing we have to actual superfoods and should be a staple of any healthy eater’s diet. So, if your child or partner is a stubborn eater who neglects broccoli, don’t lose hope. Be persistent and they might just wind up loving broccoli. READ MORE

Eat Your Greens

Posted on August 20, 2019

Don’t like the taste of greens? Here are 11 clever ways to add them to your diet

Greens such as cilantro and spinach are some of the healthiest foods on the planet, offering a range of benefits from better digestion to stronger inflammation-fighting powers. Still, even though we know we should add more greens to our diet, many of us fail to do so. Perhaps it’s because greens don’t really get your mouth salivating as other foods do.

If that’s the case, then it’s time you add some tricks to your repertoire that will help you make any type of green taste delicious. For instance, kale tastes a whole lot better when it’s marinated. By covering kale with a mixture of acid, oil, and salt, not only will it taste better, but it will also be easier for your body to break down.

Smoothies are another tasty way to sneak more greens into your diet. Along with the usual fruits, add some fresh leafy greens to your smoothies—you’ll be surprised how easily they balance each other out.

On the lookout for more genius ways to eat your greens? Here are 9 more. READ MORE

Shake Those Sugar Cravings

Posted on July 1, 2019

Take control over your sweet tooth and do a sugar detox

Go on any wellness website these days and you’ll find all kinds of detoxes that are supposed to boost your health. But if there’s one detox that you must give a try, it’s a sugar detox.

As registered dietitian Brook Alpert eloquently puts it, “sugar makes you fat, ugly, and old.” Sugar wreaks havoc on your immune system and sets you up for weight gains. And to make matters worse, it’s very hard to cut sugar out of your diet. In fact, research suggests that sugar induces rewards and cravings that are similar in magnitude to those induced by addictive drugs. But if you can manage to get sugar out of your life, it can help you quickly lose unwanted pounds, feel better and have a more radiant appearance.

Keen to do a sugar detox? Here is a detailed week-by-week plan that will help take control over your sugar cravings. READ MORE

Are You Ready For Summer?

Posted on June 28, 2019

4 simple ways to feel at your absolute best this summer

The sunshine of summer is enough to make you feel better than you usually do throughout the year. But with a few changes to your daily habits, you can feel at your absolute best throughout the summer. Without further ado, here are four simple ways to optimize your health during the hottest months of the year.

First, make sure to eat anti-inflammatory foods. Inflammation is at the root of many health conditions and can bring down your energy. To avoid inflammation, eat real, homemade food. Not weak salads that leave you vulnerable to a blood sugar crash in the afternoon, but “regular” food that’s boosted with anti-inflammatory tricks. Try more vegetables of all kinds, preferably four different kinds with four different colors. How about a rainbow of vegetables and berries every day? Blueberries, purple eggplant, red onion, green spinach, yellow peppers, orange carrots, red tomatoes, and all other colors. Vegetables, with their various polyphenols, act directly or indirectly (researchers are investigating this) as protective mechanisms for the plants, and we humans can “borrow” their effects to protect ourselves.

The next you’ll want to do is lower your sugar intake. A first step is to get rid of all the sugary junk in the refrigerator, freezer, and pantry such as ice cream and soda. Another method is to figure out a new standard breakfast, which will probably be different from the way you used to eat. Breakfast buffets with bread, orange juice, sugary fruit yogurt, “regular” high-lactose milk, processed cereal, and marmalade—goodbye! Many of these products will give you a blood sugar rush or create other types of inflammation. Instead, go for a breakfast that focuses on protein, fat, vegetables, and fruit.

Beyond diet, exercise is another effective way to decrease inflammation and boost your energy this summer. Aim to exercise a little every day, but vary the length and intensity. And even when you don’t feel like it, you can at least try 10 minutes.

Lastly, take time to de-stress. A moment of deep breathing and meditation decreases inflammation. So take the time to breathe deeply, meditate, practice yoga—whatever you need to do to feel relaxed. And of course, make sure to get enough sleep! READ MORE
