Why you might want to skip breakfast before working out

If you want to make your morning exercise routine more impactful on your health, you might want to consider skipping breakfast before you work out.

Over the course of a 6-week study, researchers from the universities of Bath and Birmingham studied dozens of sedentary men who were overweight or obese, from the Bath region in England. The study showed that those who worked out before breakfast burned twice the amount of fat than those who exercised after a morning meal. The researchers also found that those who exercised after fasting overnight had lower insulin levels during exercise.

Although working out before breakfast over 6 weeks didn’t lead to any weight loss differences, the study found it did have a positive impact on the participants’ health, because their bodies responded better to insulin. This effect has significant long-term ramifications: It kept their blood sugar levels in check and had the potential to reduce the risk of conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.

Although you don’t necessarily need to skip breakfast before your workouts, it’s certainly something to keep in mind if you want to get more out of your morning exercise routine.

Healthy At Any Age

Why it’s never to late to starting working out

At the ripe age of 70, Jim Owen finally came to realize that his successful career on Wall Street was a burden on his health. Not necessarily because of the stress that came with the job, but because he had been sedentary most of the time.

Owen finally began exercising after this realization and completely reclaimed his physical health over the years, even though he was 70 when he kickstarted his new active lifestyle. Now at the age of 79, Owen is as healthy as can be. A new study in the journal, Frontiers in Physiology, backs up what Owen witnessed firsthand: Even if you’ve never worked out regularly and are older, your body has the same ability to build muscle mass.

A team at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom compared the ability of men to build muscle mass. They looked at two groups: People older than 60 who exercised at least twice a week for at least 20 years and those who didn’t have a consistent workout routine. Participants had a muscle biopsy 48 hours before consuming an isotope tracer drink and conducting a weight training session, then another biopsy after finishing. The drink enabled the researchers to see how proteins were developing within the muscle.

The results? Both groups had equal abilities to build muscle in response to exercise—showing it’s never too late to start working out. The researchers do have one caution though: if you’re new to the gym, you might want to start off slowly to avoid injury. READ MORE

Want to get fit without getting injured? These tips will help you do just that

The human body is made to move, and physical activity is a requirement for lifelong health. But exercise-related injuries are a significant concern that few people think about until it’s too late. Even a mild sprain can sideline an athlete for weeks, and a sports-related injury can be debilitating for an older adult. By no means should you avoid physical activities altogether, but if you want to reduce your risk of injury while simultaneously getting fit, then the following exercises are just what you need.

Walking is associated with both long life and a reduced risk for medical-related expenditures—and a recent study found that brisk walking is especially healthy. Yoga also garners some shout-outs as a low-risk, high-reward form of physical activity. If done correctly, you can receive many benefits in terms of strength and flexibility.

For fitness enthusiasts who recoil at the idea of a life filled with long walks and yoga, there are ways to lower the injury risks associated with more intense, high-impact sports. The first tip may induce some yawns. But experts say a moderate approach to any sport or workout is a good way to avoid getting hurt. Don’t overtrain and make sure to stretch.

Taking it easy at the start and slowly working your way up to more intense workouts is another safety measure. If you’re intent on running a half-marathon, for example, sign up for next year’s—not this year’s—and try to mix in some other non-running forms of exercise (swimming, yoga) to build your strength and endurance.

Finally, if you want to avoid injury, don’t neglect your core. Whether it’s through Pilates or gym machines, doing exercise that targets your upper and your lower back, obliques, and abdominal muscles can do wonders for your overall health.

All that said, if you’re looking for safe, healthy activities that will lower your risks for injuries—as well as for disease and mortality—easy-on-your-body activities like walking, yoga, and swimming are great options. READ MORE

Don’t enjoy running? Here are 9 alternative cardio exercises you can do

Running is awesome. It’s a simple, effective form of cardio that offers a whole range of health benefits. It also sucks—depending on who you ask. But if you belong to the camp of people who simply don’t enjoy running, you can still get the benefits of cardio without having to run around the block.

For instance, jump rope is an excellent, low-impact way to get all the benefits of running. According to one study, a 10-minute daily rope-skipping program is just as effective as a 30-minute jogging regimen.

Boxing is another amazing form of cardio—and don’t worry, you don’t actually need to hop into the ring and fight someone to reap the benefits of boxing. By incorporating different types of kicks, punches, and shuffling motions, you can train your core and upper- and lower-body muscles while getting your heart pumping. If you really don’t like running, you can find more fantastic cardio exercises right here. READ MORE

Get Back in the Habit

Haven’t worked out in ages? Here are 3 strategies to motivate yourself again

Working out can be hard, but what’s even harder is working out after months of avoiding any form of fitness. Just trying to get back into the swing of things can be such a struggle that you take another huge break before trying again. To ease your fitness frustration and give you the motivation to get back on track, here are three science-backed ways that will help you make your workouts more enjoyable so you look forward to moving again.

First strategy: play upbeat music. We all know that a great playlist can make or break a workout, and science agrees: A recent study from the University of British Columbia found that insufficiently active people worked harder in their workouts and enjoyed them more when listening to upbeat music. That’s because it is a dissociative that can “draw your attention away from the body’s physiological responses to exercise” and give you the energy to push onward.

Second strategy: find a workout buddy (or a whole team!). Keeping up with a consistent habit is always easier when you have a friend or support group to help hold you accountable, and recently reported data from 1.2 million people in the US proves this to be true.

Third strategy: When it feels hard, try smiling. It might feel counterintuitive at the moment, but researchers have found that smiling during a workout (even if it’s forced) can make your exercise more enjoyable, and can even encourage you to keep going when you’re feeling the burn. So the next time you’re thinking of throwing in the towel, try throwing on a smile instead. READ MORE
