These beautiful Airbnb rentals are made from reclaimed garbage

Posted on April 26, 2019

These off-the-grid “Earthships” are the most eco-friendly rentals on Airbnb

Sustainability is a hip buzzword in travel these days, which means, of course, that the term is overused and nobody knows what it really means anymore. Reusing hotel towels and ditching plastic straws are small steps in the right direction, but there’s strong evidence that travelers are eager to go much, much further. In fact, more than 4.5 million people searched Airbnb for eco-friendly listings and bookings last year alone. Travelers who truly want to “leave no trace” on their next vacation might focus their search on Taos, New Mexico. Rising from the ground in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, more than a hundred homes known as Earthships offer the ultimate in sustainable living – and more than a dozen of them are available to rent on Airbnb. From the outside, an Earthship might be mistaken for an otherworldly dwelling – part Pueblo, part space capsule. But step inside and you’ll find, well, normality. There’s high-speed Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. Kitchens equipped with refrigerators and ovens. Modern plumbing and washing machines. So, what makes these Earthships self-sufficient? For one, these homes are off the grid and generate power from solar energy. Plus, sewage is contained and treated on site, and the walls are constructed using old items such as tires, cans, and bottles that have been thrown away. And for those of you who want to do a ‘sustainable’ trip but don’t feel like going to New Mexico, no worries: you can find Earthships all over the world and in all 50 states. READ MORE

Got ants? Here’s how to keep them out of your house naturally

Posted on April 24, 2019

Forget bug spray! Make this natural spray and keep ants out of the kitchen

Whenever you see little critters such as ants crawl into your kitchen, your first instinct is probably to buy a bug spray and douse them with the poisonous solution. Sure, this may be an effective way to rid your home of insects, but it’s terrible for two reasons. First off, bug sprays are made of toxic chemicals that are awful for humans and can affect our cells in unintended ways. Nobody should be exposed to these chemicals in the kitchen, let alone the home. The second reason you should abstain from bug spray is that with insect populations plummeting, we shouldn’t be trying to kill insects—even if they’re in our homes. Instead of using bug spray, there’s a natural non-toxic spray you can make that will get ants out of your house while simultaneously making your home smell good. And best of all, you can make it out of basic household items. All you need to do is add citrus rinds (lemons, lime, orange) to a pot and add white vinegar to cover. Next, gently heat the mixture until it’s steaming, turn off the stove, and let the mix sit for several hours. After that, all you need to do is pour it into a spray bottle and store it in the refrigerator for when you need to use it. The reason why this natural citrus vinegar spray is so effective is that it disrupts the pheromone trail that ants use to navigate along their paths. Apparently, they get one whiff and hightail it out of there. That’s much better than dousing it over the ants and making them suffer. READ MORE

How to create a bug friendly garden

Posted on April 19, 2019

No matter how much space you have, here’s what you can plant to help bugs thrive

Habitat loss is a major factor in the decline of insect populations around the world, a trend that one group of researchers has warned could bring about the “catastrophic collapse of nature’s ecosystems.” For instance, the monarch butterfly population has fallen 99.4 percent since the 1980s—a precipitous decline that has wildlife conservationists calling for them to be listed as an officially endangered species. While the monarch may be the charismatic megafauna of the insect world, other, less photogenic species are believed to be facing the same fact.

That’s where you come in: Even in small amounts, native grasses and wildflowers can provide essential shelter and food for a wide variety of wildlife—especially insects. No matter how much outdoor space you have to work with, there are flowers, shrubs, and grasses that you can grow to support a wide range of insect wildlife. Let’s say you have only a window box or enough outdoor space for a few small pots. Planting native annuals—a plant that completes their life cycle in just one year—is your best bet for attracting pollinators. If you have space for pots on your patio or rooftop, go for some native perennials—plants that will return year after year, with little or no maintenance. These include flowering shrubs like the fothergilla or blueberry. For those of you with a small garden, a good go-to plant is a milkweed, a flower essential for the propagation and survival of the monarch butterfly. And lastly, if you have a lawn, well, get rid of it. Lawns use up valuable resources like water and demand energy-guzzling maintenance while doing nothing for insects. Instead, turn your lawn into a beautiful meadow of native flowers and grasses. For tips on how to do that, look no further than here. READ MORE

Which everyday bathroom items should you be replacing?

Posted on April 8, 2019

Self-care products are hurting the environment. Here are better alternatives

Toilet paper, tampons, cotton swabs, and baby wipes are all personal care staples that, perhaps surprisingly, come with hefty environmental costs. From upstream problems, like logging crucial arboreal forests for wood pulp that becomes toilet paper, to post-use issues like the centuries it can take a tampon to biodegrade, many of these single-use products come with serious environmental costs. There are smarter, more ecologically sound choices to make for almost every item, and some may even be upgrades. Take toilet paper, for example. Instead of using toilet paper from virgin wood pulp sourced from Canada’s arboreal forests, you can select to buy single-ply paper from recycled pulp. But if you’re a really dedicated environmentalist, you could try installing a bidet, which is common in Europe and can radically reduce toilet paper use. Cotton swabs are another product you don’t really need to use. Instead, just rinse your ears in the shower with warm and you will actually clean your ears more effectively. Looking for eco-friendly replacements for tampons, sanitary pads, and baby wipes? Just take a quick a look here. READ MORE
