How to save money when you’re trying to lose weights

If you’ve ever tried to lose weight, you’ve probably come to realize that it can be a pricey endeavor for your wallet. From gym memberships to nutrition plans and expensive superfoods, the path to weight loss can cost a fortune. But it doesn’t have to be this way. With some careful planning and research, you can actually spend a lot less as you make your way on the path to weight loss and fitness. Here’s how.

The first thing you have to do is eat in, and cook enough for leftovers. Avoid expensive restaurants and try meal prepping, which is where you cook one element and incorporate it into a number of different meals throughout the week.

Secondly, buy grains, nuts, and legumes in bulk. Not only are these cheap, but they are packed with essential amino acids, protein, and other essential nutrients.

Third, buy fattier meats (if you still eat meat). Why? They’re cheaper, tastier, and loaded with the nutrients you need.

The next thing you need to do is avoid buying everything organic. Yes, buy some organic is good, but frozen fruits and veggies tend to be cheaper and pesticide-free too.

Number five: avoid wasting food. Don’t waste precious bucks on produce that winds up in the compost bin.

Sixth, don’t fall for buzzword ingredients. Whatever the trendy diet or food of the moment is, you can bet there’s a bunch of new prepackaged snacks and foods advertising them, and that hype comes at a cost.

Another good tip is to consider the ketogenic diet. The foods in this diet keep you fuller longer, which means you have to buy less food.

Tip #8: join the YMCA. Unlike most other gyms, the Y is a nonprofit meant to better the community and offers subsidized memberships for people with lower incomes.

Our penultimate tip is to simply move around more. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Bike to work. These are all examples of cost-free forms of exercise.

Lastly, the more you adhere to the first nine tips, the more you can look forward to lower medical expenses. READ MORE

When to Buy Organic

Posted on June 3, 2019

Organic food can be expensive. Here are the foods you should prioritize

With the knowledge that organic foods are typically grown using fewer chemicals, why do grocery shoppers still buy inorganic foods? The answer is simple: organic foods cost a whole lot more. Still, when it comes to buying produce, there are foods that you should really consider buying organically, and others where it doesn’t really matter if it’s organic or not, such as fruits with a peel. So if you have a small budget and still want to buy organic, here’s a list of the foods you should prioritize.

First up on the list are berries. Annual testing by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and US Department of Agriculture (USDA) finds that non-organic strawberries regularly carry residues of many types of pesticides. Blackberries are also due to special attention because of illegally high pesticide residue levels. Simply put, if you’re going to buy berries, go organic. Other fresh fruits such as conventionally produced cherries, apples and applesauce should also be bought organically if possible.

Then we have kale and spinach. These salad fixings have often been found to have potentially unhealthy pesticide residues.

If you’re still eating meat, make sure to go organic. Non-organic chickens are often raised in tightly confined spaces with hundreds of other birds, causing health problems. Plus, the widespread use of antibiotics has been tied to antibiotic resistance health problems in humans. Hamburgers are much the same, as well as the milk that comes from cows.

Oatmeal, surprisingly enough, is another food that should be bought organic because non-organic oat farmers spray their oats with herbicides to dry them out right before the harvest. These herbicides have been classified as a probable human carcinogen.

Bread is another food to look out for. Preservatives and other additives have been found to be almost four times higher in conventional bread than in organic bread.

Then there’s tofu. Conventional tofu typically comes from genetically modified soybeans sprayed directly with glyphosate weedkiller. Better to avoid it.

Last but not least, eggs. Instead of buying conventional eggs that come from chickens living in battery cages, choose for organic eggs from chickens raised on a diet free from most pesticides and not confined to tight cages. READ MORE

Losing Weight Doesn’t Have to Cost Big

Posted on May 13, 2019

6 tips for losing weight on a budget

If you’re trying to lose weight, there’s no need to spend lavishly on the trendy superfoods you often see online. Sure, buying a coconut matcha latte is a nice healthy treat, but do you need it? No, not really. Should you be looking to lose weight without spending too much dough, the following six tips will help you do just that. First, reduce food waste. The scraps of food you have after cooking a meal, such as half an avocado or a boiled egg, can be repurposed into different meals if you get creative. Next tip: skip organic (sometimes). Eating more fruits and vegetables—whether they’re organic or not—will help you eat more fiber and get more vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. If organic food is just too expensive, it’s OK to buy non-organic. Third, buy frozen and canned produce. Sure, it may sound basic, but there are some really inventive frozen products on the cheap these days, from cauliflower rice to carrot spirals, that are low-calorie. Number four: try meal delivery services like Blue Apron. They might be expensive, but they provide small amounts of high-quality ingredients so that you don’t need to go the store yourself—which can save time and money in terms of reducing food waste. The fifth tip is to add beans to your meals. While beans aren’t the sexiest of foods, they are some of the cheapest finds in the grocery store that are also healthy. And last but not least, just slow down when you eat. When you scarf your food, you may naturally overeat. Slow down and you’ll be just as satisfied on less. READ MORE
