12 answers to common climate excuses

The writer James Baldwin once said, “Not everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced.” As a society, it is time we face climate change head-on, but unfortunately, there are still many who deny climate change or would rather sweep the issue under the rug. Whether out of sincere disbelief, fear, or denial, it can be frustrating to interact with those who refuse to see the severity of climate change and the threat it poses to our world.

This week, we share with you 12 common excuses for climate inaction and how you can address them with rationality, rather than rage. Here is a glimpse of the first five:

1.) Isn’t it alarmist to talk about the extinction of the human race? Yes, it is concerning that we have already emitted enough carbon to cause 1.1 degrees Celsius of warming, but addressing the potential suffering of billions of people is not alarmist, it’s empathetic and realistic.

2.) Isn’t it too late to prevent catastrophe? Yes, much damage has already been done, but each fraction of a degree of warming exacerbates the issue and we owe it to future generations to soften the blow of climate change and prevent further disaster.

3.) How do we face something so depressing? It is depressing, but it is also exciting to have the potential to save our civilization. We are mobilizing as a planet against a critical danger and we have the potential to act together with inspiring strength and innovation.

4.) Won’t it be impossible to get off fossil fuels? Yes, the fossil fuel industry is powerful, but more than half the UK now runs off renewable power and the efficiency and affordability of renewables is growing by the day. Need more evidence? Check out any number of Optimist Daily articles on renewable energy such as this one about Google’s renewables acquisition or this UN report about the bright future of green energy.

5.) How do I make a difference as one person in a world of 7 billion? As we said already, every little bit makes a difference, and small daily decisions in defense of the environment can empower you to feel like a capable warrior in the fight against climate change.

In solidarity with global climate strike, Patagonia will close its doors September 20th

Companies are slowing beginning to acknowledge the need for greater environmental consciousness in their business practices, but one company has been practicing green corporate responsibility for years and continues to put its money where its mouth is: Patagonia. In keeping with their environmentally oriented business platform, Patagonia will close its doors in honor of the youth climate strike this Friday, September 20th.

The company has donated millions of dollars to environmental causes and practices green textile production within its own brand. Patagonia’s CEO Rose Marcario was very clear about her reasons for supporting the youth climate strikes started by 16-year-old activist Greta Thunberg: “For decades, many corporations have single-mindedly pursued profits at the expense of everything else — employees, communities and the air, land, and water we all share. Now we face a dangerously hot and fast-changing climate that is exacerbating natural disasters, causing food and water shortages, and speeding us toward the biggest economic catastrophe in history. The plain truth is that capitalism needs to evolve if humanity is going to survive.”

We at the Optimist Daily applaud environmentally conscious business models and encourage you to learn more about the global climate strike and how corporations play a part in climate change. READ MORE

5 simple steps for becoming a climate activist in everyday life

Being a climate activist doesn’t mean you have to chain yourself to a tree or march through streets with a placard above your head. Climate activism can also be embedded in the everyday choices you make that benefit the well-being of the environment. Check out the following tips for becoming a climate activist—and you’ll see it’s not so hard. The first thing you can do is write a handwritten letter addressed to a company or organization that urges them to take action on a certain environmental issue. It doesn’t have to be lengthy or full of statistics citing the end of the world. All it needs is an uncomplicated message that the receiver can understand. The next thing you can do is sign petitions online. Many people say online activism is a halfhearted form of activism, but these days, online petitions have the ability to raise awareness faster than ever. Third, host a movie night. There are many wonderful movies dedicated to the topic of reducing plastic and waste. Organize a movie night, and get all your friends informed about the problems surrounding waste. Number four: engage with the government. From joining your local city council to simply talking to political representatives, there are plenty of ways to engage with the government. The fifth and final tip is an essential one: if your area hasn’t banned bags already, help start a campaign to do so. With a few thousands signatures and support from your local community, you can get bags banned in your area in no time. READ MORE

How a regenerative revolution could reverse climate change
