Got ants? Here’s how to keep them out of your house naturally

Posted on April 24, 2019

Forget bug spray! Make this natural spray and keep ants out of the kitchen

Whenever you see little critters such as ants crawl into your kitchen, your first instinct is probably to buy a bug spray and douse them with the poisonous solution. Sure, this may be an effective way to rid your home of insects, but it’s terrible for two reasons. First off, bug sprays are made of toxic chemicals that are awful for humans and can affect our cells in unintended ways. Nobody should be exposed to these chemicals in the kitchen, let alone the home. The second reason you should abstain from bug spray is that with insect populations plummeting, we shouldn’t be trying to kill insects—even if they’re in our homes. Instead of using bug spray, there’s a natural non-toxic spray you can make that will get ants out of your house while simultaneously making your home smell good. And best of all, you can make it out of basic household items. All you need to do is add citrus rinds (lemons, lime, orange) to a pot and add white vinegar to cover. Next, gently heat the mixture until it’s steaming, turn off the stove, and let the mix sit for several hours. After that, all you need to do is pour it into a spray bottle and store it in the refrigerator for when you need to use it. The reason why this natural citrus vinegar spray is so effective is that it disrupts the pheromone trail that ants use to navigate along their paths. Apparently, they get one whiff and hightail it out of there. That’s much better than dousing it over the ants and making them suffer. READ MORE

Peace: A New Definition
may peace prevail

By Sadie Wilbur

The sun warms my skin as I step out of the car and, with a deep breath, the fresh morning air fills my lungs and wakes my senses. It’s the same walk into the Optimist Daily office that I make every morning, but today I stop and notice a white pole standing to the right of the entrance that reads, “May Peace Prevail On Earth.” A small gold plaque below indicates that the pole represents a peace prize from the United Nations Association (UNA) of Santa Barbara and Tri-Counties, the oldest chapter in the nation. As a… READ MORE

How to Handle Chronic Stress

Five stress-reducing tips for the overwhelmed millennial
stressed millenials

Millennials are known to be the most stressed generation we’ve ever seen, and the evidence is there to prove it. Research points out that depression is on the rise among younger millennials. Men in this generation are also said to be losing their hair at an earlier age. And the fact that student debt is at an all-time high isn’t helping either. Still, it doesn’t need to be so dark. With a few changes to your mindset, you can shrug off the stress and start feeling better. Elyse Fox, a millennial who has overcome chronic stress, has some tips for you right here that will help relax a little more.

First, realize the power of ‘no’. Using the power of “no” can help prevent you from burning out throughout the week. You may need to say “no” if you’re feeling overloaded at work or in your relationships. Ultimately, it’s important to know and define your limits, and use the word ‘no’ when needed. The second tip: get into journaling. Other than costing you little to no money at all, it’s a fantastic way to manage anxiety. It can also help you get to know yourself better so you can identify possible stress triggers. The third thing Fox recommends is practicing yoga…in your bedroom. You don’t need to go to a yoga studio to experience the stress-relieving power of yoga. Youtube has you covered with quality lessons that are short and sweet. Writing appreciation lists is the fourth tip from Fox. Keep a pad near your bed and each night before you fall asleep, write out a list of 10 positive moments that happened throughout the day. Lastly, Fox says to check out Finsta, a social media platform where people can be as silly and unpolished as they like while remaining in touch with friends online. READ MORE

5 tips to let go and really take time off

Posted on April 19, 2019

Struggling with leisure guilt? Here are 5 ways to deal with it

Have you ever tried to enjoy some time away from your daily obligations only to feel guilty for doing so? If you have, you’re not alone. Plenty of people feel guilty when they try to take a moment off to relax, even after working all day on something. And while this might say something positive about your work ethic, it can have bad consequences for your stress levels.

The next time you feel this unnecessary guilt, remember these five techniques for dealing with it. First, recognize your tendencies. You’ll have a tough time addressing your guilt if you don’t first notice that it is occurring. If you detect that you feel a blunt sense of anxiety or tension when you’re trying to get away from your obligations and relax, try paying closer attention to the experience. Is this really guilt? Is it perhaps boredom? Second, consider why you feel guilty. Do you have something important to finish that other people are relying on, which might justify the guilt? Or do you just feel like you should always be working? Once you’ve asked yourself these questions, do a priorities audit. Many of us get socialized into thinking that external measures of success are of primary importance, but the time you take for yourself is equally important in building a successful life. Think about and write down your life priorities and consider how your leisure time helps you achieve them. The next thing you need to do is acknowledge that you deserve to enjoy some time off. Be a little selfish and boost your own well-being. After all, this is your life. Lastly, recognize that you’re getting better at your tasks. When you use your leisure time effectively, you’ll see your ability to perform well will skyrocket. READ MORE

How to create a bug friendly garden

Posted on April 19, 2019

No matter how much space you have, here’s what you can plant to help bugs thrive

Habitat loss is a major factor in the decline of insect populations around the world, a trend that one group of researchers has warned could bring about the “catastrophic collapse of nature’s ecosystems.” For instance, the monarch butterfly population has fallen 99.4 percent since the 1980s—a precipitous decline that has wildlife conservationists calling for them to be listed as an officially endangered species. While the monarch may be the charismatic megafauna of the insect world, other, less photogenic species are believed to be facing the same fact.

That’s where you come in: Even in small amounts, native grasses and wildflowers can provide essential shelter and food for a wide variety of wildlife—especially insects. No matter how much outdoor space you have to work with, there are flowers, shrubs, and grasses that you can grow to support a wide range of insect wildlife. Let’s say you have only a window box or enough outdoor space for a few small pots. Planting native annuals—a plant that completes their life cycle in just one year—is your best bet for attracting pollinators. If you have space for pots on your patio or rooftop, go for some native perennials—plants that will return year after year, with little or no maintenance. These include flowering shrubs like the fothergilla or blueberry. For those of you with a small garden, a good go-to plant is a milkweed, a flower essential for the propagation and survival of the monarch butterfly. And lastly, if you have a lawn, well, get rid of it. Lawns use up valuable resources like water and demand energy-guzzling maintenance while doing nothing for insects. Instead, turn your lawn into a beautiful meadow of native flowers and grasses. For tips on how to do that, look no further than here. READ MORE
