Are you making this common mistake when applying moisturizer?

Posted on April 26, 2019

People who use SPF moisturizer tend to make this basic mistake, researchers say

If you’re one of the millions of people using a daily moisturizer with sun protection factor (SPF) to shield your face from sun damage, chances are you’re not getting as much protection as you think. According to new research published earlier this month, most people who use facial moisturizers tend to miss sensitive areas like the eyelids more than if they were applying regular sunscreen. While many moisturizers contain high SPF similar in strength to what you’d find in a sunscreen, they simply aren’t being applied in the same way. And that’s a problem because the eyelids are just as sensitive, perhaps more sensitive than other parts of the body when it comes to sun damage. The researchers weren’t able to uncover why people using facial moisturizers miss the eyelids, but they believe it could be because subconsciously people are not as thorough when applying a face moisturizer as they are when applying sunscreen. In any case, if you’re concerned with protecting your skin from harmful UV rays, make sure to cover every inch of exposed skin…including the eye lids. READ MORE

These beautiful Airbnb rentals are made from reclaimed garbage

These off-the-grid “Earthships” are the most eco-friendly rentals on Airbnb

Sustainability is a hip buzzword in travel these days, which means, of course, that the term is overused and nobody knows what it really means anymore. Reusing hotel towels and ditching plastic straws are small steps in the right direction, but there’s strong evidence that travelers are eager to go much, much further. In fact, more than 4.5 million people searched Airbnb for eco-friendly listings and bookings last year alone. Travelers who truly want to “leave no trace” on their next vacation might focus their search on Taos, New Mexico. Rising from the ground in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, more than a hundred homes known as Earthships offer the ultimate in sustainable living – and more than a dozen of them are available to rent on Airbnb. From the outside, an Earthship might be mistaken for an otherworldly dwelling – part Pueblo, part space capsule. But step inside and you’ll find, well, normality. There’s high-speed Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. Kitchens equipped with refrigerators and ovens. Modern plumbing and washing machines. So, what makes these Earthships self-sufficient? For one, these homes are off the grid and generate power from solar energy. Plus, sewage is contained and treated on site, and the walls are constructed using old items such as tires, cans, and bottles that have been thrown away. And for those of you who want to do a ‘sustainable’ trip but don’t feel like going to New Mexico, no worries: you can find Earthships all over the world and in all 50 states. READ MORE

What to do when you’re feeling lonely in your relationship

Just because you’re in a relationship doesn’t mean you can’t feel lonely. It is not a feeling reserved for those who are single or alone. In fact, a 2018 Pew Research Center survey found that 28 percent of people who are dissatisfied with their family lives feel lonely all or most of the time. When it comes to those of us in relationships, people tend to feel lonely because either something isn’t working in the relationship itself or because they look to their partner to fill a void that they’ve been carrying within themselves. Whatever the culprit, here, ways to address the root of loneliness are there for you to be explored. If you’re feeling lonely in your relationship, here’s what you can do about it. READ MORE

What is the Akrasia Effect?

Posted on April 25, 2019

These three strategies will help you beat procrastination

One explanation for why procrastination can rule our lives and pull us in has to do with a behavioral economics term called “time inconsistency.” Time inconsistency refers to the tendency of the human brain to value immediate rewards more highly than future rewards. When you make plans for yourself — like setting a goal to lose weight or write a book or learn a language — you are actually making plans for your future self. You are envisioning what you want your life to be like in the future and when you think about the future it is easy for your brain to see the value in taking actions with long-term benefits. When the time comes to make a decision, however, you are no longer making a choice for your future self. Now you are in the moment and your brain is thinking about the present self. And researchers have discovered that the present self really likes instant gratification, not long-term payoff. To overcome this way of thinking and beat procrastination, try these three strategies. First strategy: design your future actions by creating a “commitment device.” This entails making a choice that will lock in future behavior, bind you to good habits, and restrict you from bad ones. For example, you may lock your phone away until you finish that essay you’re supposed to write. Second strategy: Reduce the friction of starting. We procrastinate not because the actual process of working is hard, but because starting the work is hard. To ease this pain, put your energy into creating a ritual that makes it as easy as possible to get started. Third strategy: Utilize implementation intentions. This is when you state your intention to implement a particular behavior at a specific time. For example, “I will exercise for at least 30 minutes on [DATE] in [PLACE] at [TIME].” Research suggests this actually helps get people to beat procrastination. READ MORE

Want to be more curious?

Posted on April 24, 2019

Here’s a simple way to cultivate more curiosity within you
cultivate curiosity

In the 21st century, we need skills to solve complex problems and address challenges that do not have one answer and cannot be distilled into mathematical equations or contained by traditional borders. And with the rise of automation, skills that machines and robots simply can’t do—skills that are “unautomatable”—become all the more important. That’s where curiosity comes in. People who are curious are better able to identify what fascinates them, allowing them to nurture that fascination and create new solutions. Want to become a more curious person? One easy way is to rethink the way you have conversations and focus on asking better questions. Organizations like the Right Question Institute help people do exactly this, with clear guidance and details. But it’s easier than that; there are simple exercises you can do to get started. For example, pick a topic and ask as many questions as you can about it in five minutes. Don’t judge; just ask. Chances are great that this will help to not only organize your thinking but also to spur new ideas, connections … and even answers. If you’re hungry for more tips on how to cultivate curiosity, take a look right here. READ MORE
