Good For the Body & Soul

Walking in the woodlands can do wonders for your overall well-being

Whether it’s an adrenaline-fueled mountain bike descent or simply sitting quietly on the forest floor and observing the surroundings, research has shown that heading for the trees is the perfect way to take time out.

That’s why Forestry England – the nation’s largest land manager and custodian of public forests – has launched a drive to encourage more people to make regular visits to woodlands to improve mental wellbeing. The organization claims that numerous studies have shown that as little as two or three short jaunts to woods and forests dramatically improve mental as well as physical health. Forestry England has gathered data from a string of studies that it says shows there is strong scientific evidence that visiting a forest can improve mood and attention span, and even enhance psychological stress recovery. The organization also says walking among trees reduces levels of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress, and claims a forest walk can boost the immune system through breathing in phytoncides, which trees emit to protect themselves from germs and insects.

So, next time you’re looking for a place to find peace in today’s hectic world, just reach out to the trees. READ MORE

10 ways to become more comfortable with your body

Almost everyone struggles with body image. Regardless of your actual size or shape, odds are that there’s at least one area of your body that bothers you. Your relationship with your body is a complex (and political) topic, but there are plenty of practical, actionable ways you can start improving it.

For instance, one way is to become more mindful about media. We are bombarded with images of the exact same kinds of bodies every single day: thin, white, healthy, and cisgender. Even if you rationally understand that bodies are infinitely more diverse than what we’re exposed to, you still start to develop subconscious expectations that your body should look that way too. Unless you want to live in a cave for the rest of your life, you’re not going to be able to prevent yourself from seeing this “ideal” body image all over the media. But you can unfollow the Instagram accounts, stop buying the magazines, and stop looking at the celebrity photos that actively make you feel bad about yourself.

Another way to change your relationship with your body is to talk to your body. Give it compliments. Talk to your body about the fact that you’re trying to change your relationship with it. If you catch yourself insulting your body, try out an exercise I developed called the Five-To-One Body Talk Rule. Every time you catch yourself saying something negative about your body, force yourself to stop in that moment and say five positive things about your body. When you do this, it can create positive changes to the image you have of your body.

The Power of Thought

Need a boost? Study says simply thinking about coffee can energize you

The source of coffee’s powerful stimulating effects may not be limited to the caffeine in it, or even to its rich, distinct aroma. A new study suggests that merely being exposed to cues about coffee is enough to perk up the mind and make us more likely to concentrate on the task at hand, while the same could not be said for tea. Crucially, however, this was only found to be true for people who psychologically link coffee with ideas of alertness, ambition, and productivity, as is the case in western cultures.

According to what psychologists call “construal level theory,” people can process information or imagine events in either broad or specific modes, and the way we behave differs accordingly. In the coffee study, the researchers ran four experiments involving lab and online tests. Across the experiments, the researchers say they found evidence that priming people with coffee cues—exposing them to images and other stimuli that conjured thoughts about coffee did increase their mental construal, and also made them perceive time as shorter. An hour seemed to zip by faster with coffee on the mind. One useful takeaway from these studies could be to experiment with different ways of benefiting from coffee during the day without drinking it after the morning cup. READ MORE

Can Scorpion Venom Be the Key to Detecting Brain Tumors?

Posted on May 20, 2019

Scorpion venom could help surgeons remove brain cancer more easily

Though the venom of some scorpions can deliver pain, and occasionally death, to humans, scorpion venom is used in a number of medical fields, including cancer research. Recently, for instance, scientists have developed an imaging technique that uses a synthetic version of a compound found in scorpion venom to make brain tumors easier to see.

Treating gliomas, a lethal kind of brain tumor, can be incredibly difficult. These tumors don’t respond well to conventional chemo or radiotherapy, and they tend to spread across a wide spectrum of brain tissue, making it difficult for surgeons to easily detect and remove all of the cancerous tissue.

By administering the compound from the scorpion venom to patients with gliomas along with a fluorescent dye, surgeons are able to identify the tumor more clearly, and thus, remove it more easily. The novel imaging technique is currently undergoing broader clinical trialing, including a study involving pediatric brain cancer, ahead of a hopeful FDA approval in the near future. Winning the War on Child Mortality

Posted on May 20, 2019

The global child mortality rate has dropped to an all-time low

These days, it can sometimes feel like everything is getting worse. We’re faced every day with the problems we haven’t solved yet and new ones that we’re creating, and the barrage of bad news can be dispiriting. In these times of seeming despair, it’s extremely important to take a step back and realize the progress we’ve made in the past few decades.

Just look at the child mortality rate, for instance. In the 1950s, more than 20 million children died each year. Now child deaths are much rarer. In fact, the child mortality rate has dropped by two-thirds since the 1950s, according to a new report. That’s an amazing achievement, and a reminder of how awful the world used to be, how quickly it has improved, and, yes, how much we still need to do. Even better, that gain in lives has been accompanied by similar gains in living conditions. Far more people are literate. Far fewer live in extreme poverty. Fewer go hungry. Most people have access to the internet — something not even the richest among us enjoyed in 1950. READ MORE
