Why living near public amenities such as parks can change your life

As our political discourse generates derision and dissension, our time in the virtual world crowds out our time in the actual one, and trust in our institutions and each other has plummeted, local places such as markets, libraries, and coffee shops can help.

A new study shows that living near community-oriented public and commercial spaces bring a host of social benefits such as increased trust, decreased loneliness, and a stronger sense of attachment to where we live. Americans who live in communities with a richer array of neighborhood amenities are twice as likely to talk daily with their neighbors as those whose neighborhoods have few amenities. More importantly, given the widespread interest in the topic of loneliness in America, people living in amenity-rich communities are much less likely to feel isolated from others, regardless of whether they live in large cities, suburbs, or small towns. Fifty-five percent of Americans living in low-amenity suburbs report a high degree of social isolation, while fewer than one-third of suburbanites in amenity-dense neighborhoods report feeling so isolated.

What this tells us is that while the economic benefits of creating community-oriented spaces can be a challenge to see, the social benefits that these spaces have for the well-being of people is clear and should be considered more. READ MORE

New hope for people recovering from addiction

New study finds CBD can effectively treat heroin addiction

Nearly 400,000 Americans have died of opioid-related causes since 2000, just slightly fewer than the number of American troops who died in World War II. That’s a jaw-dropping number, but fortunately, researchers have found an effective solution to treating addiction that could potentially save lives.

In a new study, researchers administered cannabidiol, the non-psychoactive ingredient in hemp and marijuana, to patients suffering from heroin addiction. What they found was that it reduced their cravings for the illicit drug, which is a big deal because the intense craving is said to drive drug use. On top of that, patients reported less anxiety after being administered CBD.

Many obstacles stand in the way of recovering addicts who want to get their hands on medications that work to reduce cravings, which is why they’re not widely used. CBD oil, however, is more widely available and seems to be just as effective in treating addiction. Although more research needs to be done, the researchers are optimistic about the implications of their latest study.READ MORE

How to let go of perfection and start getting things done

Do you have a big life project you want to work on but struggle to find the will to do it? If so, you’re not alone. Many people stumble when trying to execute projects, all because of our natural tendency to crave perfection. Yes, the challenge we face as human beings is that we are not perfect, and we never will be. But by letting go of the idea of perfection and caring just enough about the things we do, we can develop more effective strategies to accomplish our goals. Here are three steps for doing just that.

Step 1: identify what you need to do next. Any big project can be overwhelming, simply by virtue of it being … well … big. But often, the scope of the project ahead is not the intimidating part. It’s the individual steps we need to take that hang us up. In order to figure out which steps you should take first, let your feeling guide. Listen to that self-nagging voice within you and identify what needs to be done first.

Step 2: start on something. We tend to think we need the perfect starting point. That we need to know how each step fits into the larger whole. In reality, we just need to take the next step—even if it’s a dreadful one. More often than we’d imagine, we will discover that the dreaded task isn’t nearly as dreadful as we had imagined. Once we start in, we might even be surprised to find out that the very thing we had been avoiding is actually kind of interesting, possibly even fun. In any case, once you start something, you can get the momentum rolling and move onward.

Step 3: learn to let it go. If you don’t get everything done as perfectly as you wanted to, just relax. There’s no point in driving yourself crazy. Be proud of yourself for whatever progress you make, and save your energy for when you get working on your project again. READ MORE

Employ these tips to put an end to interruptions

Posted on May 27, 2019

Here’s how to stop people from interrupting you while you work

You’ve finally gotten started on a project that you have been putting aside for a while and you’re entering a flow-state where your focus is optimal. Then, out of nowhere, someone barges into your workspace and interrupts your concentration. Does this sound familiar to you? According to a recent survey, 51.5 percent of people are interrupted frequently throughout the day, hampering their ability to be productive. If you’re one of those people, here’s how to get others to stop interrupting you.

The first thing you want to do is make your “unavailable” time known to your colleagues. Share your calendar with your colleagues to make it easier for them to know when you’re occupied with important tasks. Make it clear that during your “unavailable time”, they should only interrupt you if they have to.

Secondly, you must stop interrupting yourself. Browser tabs, clutter on your desk, and notifications are the biggest distractions when you want to get stuff done. When working on your important stuff, close all tabs that have no relevance to the work in progress or disconnect completely.

The third thing you should do is use the “two-minute rule.” Basically, this rule states that you should deal immediately with all interruptions that take two minutes or less. Two minutes is short enough to prevent loss of engagement when you have to get back to your task quickly. Once you deal with the interruption, you can revamp your focus once more.

Another tactic is to use a trigger. For instance, headphones are a great trigger that can help you assume “focused mode” while needing the signal to people that you are not available.

And if none of these tactics work, try creating an interrupters log. This is a simple record of your interruptions in the course of a day. Research shows that self-monitoring massively reduces the time spent on low-value work and interruptions. If you can identify the source of your interruptions, you will be able to put strategies in place to minimize them. READ MORE

Great Sleep Starts When You Wake Up

Work these four tips into your daily routine for a good night’s sleep

Most of us tend to think that the trick to getting quality sleep lies in our pre-bedtime routines.

False!

The real key to enjoying a good night’s sleep relies entirely on what you do throughout the day. To help you simmer down throughout the day so you’ll be ready to yield to sleep when night falls, make sure to work these four tips into your daily routine.

First tip: don’t start your day by looking at your phone. Nothing ramps up stress-hormone cortisol like attending to a barrage of emails, alerts, and text messages first thing in the a.m. Instead of focusing on what others want from you, use those first few minutes as a sacred time to focus on yourself and what you want from life. That might include lying in silence and taking a few deep breaths, repeating a positive mantra, or setting an intention for your day.

Second tip: take a daily “tech time out” to improve your focus and reduce stress. Studies demonstrate that smartphones decrease productivity, which ultimately amplifies stress because the work we’re not getting done piles up — alongside cortisol. Carve out some phone-free time throughout your day, finish what you need to do, and end the day without leftover stress. You’ll sleep better because of it.

Third tip: schedule strategic worry time. It may sound strange, but setting some time apart to allow yourself to feel your emotions without trying to change them in any way helps you flush those thoughts out of your system for the day and can help you settle into a more soothing state at night.

Fourth tip: build recovery time into your day. Don’t let tensions mount too long. Set alarms on your phone to schedule short breaks throughout the day to incorporate the type of chilltime you enjoy, whether it’s meditation or a quick walk outside. Once you incorporate these four tips into your day, you’ll find falling asleep will be much easier. READ MORE
