Decision Fatigue

Posted on June 7, 2019

These 3 simple habits will help you stress less about money

We know decision fatigue is an issue: Essentially it’s what happens when we are faced with too many choices, either over a period of time or all at once. And as studies have shown, when we are overwhelmed, we are unable to think through our decisions, and often act irrationally or impulsively.

This can lead to problems when it comes to how we deal with money. For instance, by stressing over all the little choices we make over money (say, like spending the extra $1 on guacamole), we’re actually exhausting ourselves in the long run. In the long run, this can result in a lot of anxiety when we have to make decisions that really matter. The good thing is there are ways to fix money-related decision fatigue. Here are 3 simple habits you can use to help you worry less about money.

First habit: start “front-loading.” It’s a simple concept: Every month or week, create a framework of how much you are comfortable spending—and on what. That last part is key as it will help ease decision making later. So, for example, if you know you are comfortable spending a bit more money on a workout class because it’s good for you and your mental health, then you won’t feel the stress when you actually have to put down the money for it.

Second habit: automate when possible. Whether it’s your rent or your phone bill, automate it if it’s possible. These things don’t need a decision, and you should save your financial mental space for things that you have control over such as how much you spend on vacations.

The third habit: don’t avoid decisions altogether. We should be clear: Limiting your decision making does not equal putting it off entirely. So, of course, you need to be self-aware about the choices you are making, and also the decisions you are not. When you are fully aware of how your money is being spent, you limit the need to worry. Hot vs Cold

Posted on June 7, 2019

Here’s why you should use cold water in your cleaning machines

At some point in your life, you were probably told that hot water cleans better than cold water when you’re using the dishwasher or washing machine. We’re here to tell you that’s not the case.

According to a senior scientist for sustainability at Seventh Generation (a cleaning company), hot water was useful years and years ago because it “sped up the cleaning process when detergents and machines were less efficient.” Nowadays, detergents have been formulated to be effective even in cold water. They no longer need to be “activated” with hot water, as earlier versions did, and contain enzymes that “literally cut up the soils and allow the surfactants to move the stains off the clothing.”

Cold water has additional benefits. It doesn’t fix stains in place the way hot water does, meaning you can actually get cleaner-looking clothes as a result; and it is gentler on fabrics, increasing their longevity. Not to mention turning down the heat on the washing machine and dishwasher can save you a boatload of energy. When it comes to laundry, three-quarters of emissions associated with a single load comes from heating the water itself, so a small tweak practiced over time can go a long way toward reducing your household’s impact. Is There a Better Way to Argue?

Posted on June 6, 2019

Science tells us these are the two best techniques for arguing successfully

Anyone who has argued with an opinionated relative or friend about immigration or gun control knows it is often impossible to sway someone with strong views. That’s in part because our brains work hard to ensure the integrity of our worldview: We seek out information to confirm what we already know, and are dismissive or avoidant of facts that are hostile to our core beliefs. But it’s not impossible to make your argument stick. And there’s been some good scientific work on this. Here are two strategies that, based on the evidence, seem promising.

First strategy: if the argument you find convincing doesn’t resonate with someone else, find out what does. Whenever we engage in political debates, we all tend to overrate the power of arguments we find personally convincing — and wrongly think the other side will be swayed. What both sides fail to understand is that they’re arguing a point that their opponents have not only already dismissed but may be inherently deaf to. In a study done by Robb Willer, a professor of sociology and psychology at Stanford University, that conservatives would be more willing to support a hypothetical liberal candidate for president if that candidate used language that reflected conservative values. For instance, conservatives who read that the candidate’s “vision for America is based on respect for the values and traditions that were handed down to us…” were more likely to say they supported him than when the candidate’s message was framed with liberal buzzwords. Willer’s work is based on moral foundations theory, which is the idea that people have stable, gut-feel morals that influenced their worldview. When you reframe the morals of what you argue, it’s possible to change one’s mind about it.

Second strategy: Listen! Your ideological opponents want to feel like they’ve been heard. In a study published in 2016, researchers found that it was possible to reduce prejudice and sway opinions on anti-transgender legislation, with one 10-minute conversation. Why? Because the ones arguing against the legislation felt like they were being listened to. When you listen and highlight each other’s shared humanity, you have a far better chance of delivering your message. For more details on how to argue according to science, have a look here. Hit Your Goals Without Breaking the Bank

How to save money when you’re trying to lose weights

If you’ve ever tried to lose weight, you’ve probably come to realize that it can be a pricey endeavor for your wallet. From gym memberships to nutrition plans and expensive superfoods, the path to weight loss can cost a fortune. But it doesn’t have to be this way. With some careful planning and research, you can actually spend a lot less as you make your way on the path to weight loss and fitness. Here’s how.

The first thing you have to do is eat in, and cook enough for leftovers. Avoid expensive restaurants and try meal prepping, which is where you cook one element and incorporate it into a number of different meals throughout the week.

Secondly, buy grains, nuts, and legumes in bulk. Not only are these cheap, but they are packed with essential amino acids, protein, and other essential nutrients.

Third, buy fattier meats (if you still eat meat). Why? They’re cheaper, tastier, and loaded with the nutrients you need.

The next thing you need to do is avoid buying everything organic. Yes, buy some organic is good, but frozen fruits and veggies tend to be cheaper and pesticide-free too.

Number five: avoid wasting food. Don’t waste precious bucks on produce that winds up in the compost bin.

Sixth, don’t fall for buzzword ingredients. Whatever the trendy diet or food of the moment is, you can bet there’s a bunch of new prepackaged snacks and foods advertising them, and that hype comes at a cost.

Another good tip is to consider the ketogenic diet. The foods in this diet keep you fuller longer, which means you have to buy less food.

Tip #8: join the YMCA. Unlike most other gyms, the Y is a nonprofit meant to better the community and offers subsidized memberships for people with lower incomes.

Our penultimate tip is to simply move around more. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Bike to work. These are all examples of cost-free forms of exercise.

Lastly, the more you adhere to the first nine tips, the more you can look forward to lower medical expenses. READ MORE

Power of Positivity

These 3 strategies will help you train your mind to be more positive

When something goes wrong at work, it’s normal to take that negative experience and hold onto it for the rest of the day — or maybe even for the whole week. That tendency is a product of how our brains are wired, and it exposes us to extra, unneeded stress. But it doesn’t have to be like this. Although it can be difficult, it’s possible to reframe our negative experiences, let go of negativity, and focus on the good. Here are three strategies that will help you train your mind to focus more on the positive.

First strategy: practice “gain framing”. According to Alison Ledgerwood, a social psychologist at UC Davis, the way in which you recall your own experiences can alter the way you see them. When you describe the glass as half-full, that’s what Ledgerwood calls a ‘gain frame,’ because you are focusing on what’s been gained. On the flip side, seeing the glass as half-empty is a ‘loss frame’. By using gain framing to describe your experiences to others, you will start to see the positives in any given situation.

Second strategy: acknowledges one good thing. While it’s easy to assume that venting will help get rid of your negative emotions, dwelling instead on one good thing that happened that day can prompt your brain to switch directions — which is ultimately more helpful. For optimal practice, Ledgerwood suggests taking pen to paper — even if it feels difficult at the moment.

Third strategy: respond counterintuitively. Basically, the way we react at the moment can make a significant difference in how we think about a situation later. Instead of snapping at someone who has ticked you off, trying forgiving them. If your waitress at a cafe is super grumpy, leave a nice tip anyway. By responding counterintuitively, what you’re doing is stopping your brain from the cycle of dwelling on the negative, and instead, spreading the positive to others. READ MORE
