Study: Living in areas rich with tree canopies benefits your mental psyche

In recent years, study after study has found that living in neighborhoods with abundant green space is linked to positive health outcomes. These include better heart health, stronger cognitive development, and greater overall longevity. No wonder these areas are also linked to lower levels of Medicare spending. But when it comes to promoting human health, not all green spaces are created equal. That’s the conclusion of new Australian research, which finds higher levels of wellness in areas marked by one particular manifestation of the natural world: leafy trees.

The researchers discovered that, specifically, it is the tree canopy that does best in promoting community mental health. We’ll spare you all the little details of the study, but essentially what the researchers discovered after interviewing 46,786 adults in Australia was that people living in areas where 30 percent or more of the outdoor space is dominated by tree canopy had 31 percent lower odds of psychological stress. Although the researchers can only speculate on the reasons behind their findings, they believe the tree canopies benefit people because they dampen noise pollution, reduce urban heat, remove air pollution, and add to the biodiversity of the area. Get Face to Face With Your Plants

Plants are like pets; they can’t talk to you, per se, but they communicate nonetheless. They droop, sprout, and grow in a nonverbal language that almost seems to communicate emotions. For anyone who’s ever wondered, “How does my plant really feel?” finding the answer could get a whole lot easier with Lua, a concept for a smart planter that displays your plant’s emotions (or the equivalent of).

Lua is basically an anthropomorphic vase with sensors that can measure things like soil moisture, temperature, and light exposure. These sensors are used to trigger 15 different “emotions” on the 2.4 inch LCD screen, for instance: If a plant is cold, the screen will light up with chattering teeth. If it’s too hot, the screen will show beads of sweat. A plant with too much water will look sick, and one with not enough will show it panting with its tongue out.

The designer explains that Lua is connected to an app where people can log what kind of plant they’re caring for, and the planter will automatically calibrate the sensors to the plant’s specific need. It’s a lot like other apps that take the guesswork out of plant care, only Lua is a whole lot cuter. Lua is now raising funds on Indiegogo with a projected ship date of December 2019. READ MORE

New bill seeks to ban “addictive” features on social media platforms

Today, most of the social media apps and websites we use daily are designed in such a way as to keep us hooked, instead of helping us. Social media addiction has become a serious problem of modern society, and the tech companies behind these platforms are continuously using tricks to exploit users’ psychology as part of their business models.

In an effort to curb the use of such practices, Republican Senator Josh Hawley has introduced a new bill before the Senate, aiming to ban social media and tech platforms from implementing “addictive” design and features – including auto-playing videos or endless scrolling.

The new legislation would ban the types of features and tricks that these platforms use to keep people engaged for longer periods of time. It could also outlaw some of the deceptive ways tech companies keep people from opting out of their services – perhaps finally giving users better control over the internet and social media.
