When to Buy Organic

Posted on June 3, 2019

Organic food can be expensive. Here are the foods you should prioritize

With the knowledge that organic foods are typically grown using fewer chemicals, why do grocery shoppers still buy inorganic foods? The answer is simple: organic foods cost a whole lot more. Still, when it comes to buying produce, there are foods that you should really consider buying organically, and others where it doesn’t really matter if it’s organic or not, such as fruits with a peel. So if you have a small budget and still want to buy organic, here’s a list of the foods you should prioritize.

First up on the list are berries. Annual testing by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and US Department of Agriculture (USDA) finds that non-organic strawberries regularly carry residues of many types of pesticides. Blackberries are also due to special attention because of illegally high pesticide residue levels. Simply put, if you’re going to buy berries, go organic. Other fresh fruits such as conventionally produced cherries, apples and applesauce should also be bought organically if possible.

Then we have kale and spinach. These salad fixings have often been found to have potentially unhealthy pesticide residues.

If you’re still eating meat, make sure to go organic. Non-organic chickens are often raised in tightly confined spaces with hundreds of other birds, causing health problems. Plus, the widespread use of antibiotics has been tied to antibiotic resistance health problems in humans. Hamburgers are much the same, as well as the milk that comes from cows.

Oatmeal, surprisingly enough, is another food that should be bought organic because non-organic oat farmers spray their oats with herbicides to dry them out right before the harvest. These herbicides have been classified as a probable human carcinogen.

Bread is another food to look out for. Preservatives and other additives have been found to be almost four times higher in conventional bread than in organic bread.

Then there’s tofu. Conventional tofu typically comes from genetically modified soybeans sprayed directly with glyphosate weedkiller. Better to avoid it.

Last but not least, eggs. Instead of buying conventional eggs that come from chickens living in battery cages, choose for organic eggs from chickens raised on a diet free from most pesticides and not confined to tight cages. READ MORE

Temper Your Tantrums

Feeling angry? These 25 tips will help you feel calm again

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you regret something you did or said out of anger? If so, you’re not alone. Anger is a normal feeling that we’re all bound to feel from time to time, and it can actually be a positive emotion when it helps you work through issues or problems. However, if you let anger take over you, it can also lead to aggressive outbursts that you’ll surely regret later on.

We know that controlling your anger in the heat of the moment can be a monumental task, but the good thing is that there are plenty of strategies you can use for controlling anger. For instance, if you’re feeling really mad, try counting down from 100. In the time it takes you to count, your heart rate will slow, and your anger will likely subside.

Another way is to take a break from the anger-filled situation you find yourself in and listen to some music. Put in earbuds or slip out to your car. Crank up your favorite music (avoid heavy metal), and hum, bop, or sashay your anger away.

If these specific strategies won’t do the trick, no worries. We have 23 more tips for you right here that will help you regain your calm in the face of anger. READ MORE

Work With What You’ve Got

Working out without using equipment is important. Here’s why

If you have access to a gym, there’s nothing wrong with using exercise machines. But it’s also a good idea to sometimes forgo equipment and use the weight of your own body to work out. Here’s why: While machines tend to isolate specific muscle groups, “a lot of body-weight exercises force you to control your movements and stabilize yourself, and to do that you need to recruit and train a lot of different muscles,” says Chris Gagliardi, a certified personal training and weight management specialist with the American Council on Exercise.

It’s a good workout for your brain, too, since body-weight moves often require more concentration than machine-based exercises. Not to mention stepping off the machines also gives your body a chance to make different shapes and move the muscles that machines might miss. With this in mind, here are the three best exercises that require nothing more than your own body weight. READ MORE

The Sustainable Closet

Here are 4 uncommon ways to make your wardrobe more eco-friendly

As you might already know, there are simple ways to make sure your wardrobe doesn’t contribute to the mass amounts of pollution created by the fashion industry. For instance, you can avoid fast fashion and buy second-hand clothes. You can also buy durable clothes that are sure to last. These steps to cleaning up your wardrobe are rather obvious, but there are few less commonly known tricks that can help you develop a more sustainable wardrobe. Here are four of them.

First, do the ’30 wears’ test. When faced with a potential new outfit, ask yourself if you’d wear it 30 times or more. If the answer is no, walk away. This will eliminate many of those special occasion outfits and shoes that have few opportunities to be re-worn and will push you toward more versatile, practical pieces.

Second tip: invest in trans-seasonal clothes. Clothes that can cross-seasonal boundaries are the most useful investment. Often this means simpler pieces, like jeans, tees, blazers, and classic dresses. Consider the climate when making decisions. If you live a cool, cloudy climate, don’t splurge on summery dresses that will fail the 30 wears test on an average year; buy what you know you’ll wear and whatever can be layered for more seasonally-appropriate dressing.

Third, have a working list of go-to brands. Assemble a list of go-to retailers (online or in store) where you can source key items; add to it as you discover new ones. By being more deliberate with your purchases, you can support brands that serve the environment rather than destroy it.

Lastly, adjust how you spend your money. Don’t think of shopping as a chance to splurge on something frivolous. Instead, see it as an investment in a staple piece that’s going to be worn and re-worn. In the end, you’ll save money on more expensive, sturdy jeans rather than buying several pairs over the years. READ MORE

Reason To Be

Finding a purpose in life could help you live longer

The meaning of life is a question that has plagued philosophers for millennia, and there is no single correct answer. But increasingly, scientists are finding that having a sense of purpose, whatever yours may be, is key to well-being. A new study of over-50s shows picking up a part-time job or volunteering for a charity could do more than keep you entertained in retirement. In fact, having a purpose in life could actually help you live longer. The study which was conducted by a group of researchers at the University of Michigan analyzed data from nearly 7,000 people older than 50 who were enrolled in a national study and who filled out a psychological questionnaire.

The original research measured participants’ psychological well-being in 2006, their physical health and, subsequently, causes of death by 2010. The new analysis found that those whose psychological questionnaires reflected a lack of purpose were more likely to die than those who had “a self-organizing life aim that stimulates goals”. The research also indicated that having any kind of purpose is better than having none at all and that it doesn’t matter what it is that drives an individual, whether it’s a passion for music, or wanting to see their children develop, or loving the work they do. The important thing is simply having something that makes them excited about life and drives them. READ MORE
