Laughter is the Best Medicine

Science tells us laughter can help us lead a healthier life

In 1976, Norman Cousins, the revered editor of the Saturday Review, wrote a piece that signaled the arrival of laughter in the precincts of science. The piece, which was called “Anatomy of an Illness (as Perceived by the Patient)”, follows Cousins as he checks himself out of a hospital and into a hotel after the best conventional care failed to improve his ankylosing spondylitis—a crippling autoimmune spinal arthritis. Once inside his hotel room, he took megadoses of anti-inflammatory vitamin C and watched long hours of Marx Brothers movies and TV sitcoms.

He laughed and kept on laughing. He noticed that, as he did, his pain diminished. He felt stronger and better. As good an observer as any of his first-rate doctors, he developed his own dose-response curve: ten minutes of belly laughter gave him two hours of pain-free sleep. Soon enough, he became more mobile.

Cousins’ story brought the power of laughter onto the medical map, and since then, research has found that laughter can serve as the antidote for all kinds of conditions. Laughter has been shown to decrease stress levels and improve mood in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, to decrease hostility in patients in mental hospitals, and to lower heart rate and blood pressure and to enhance mood and performance in generally healthy IT professionals. In numerous experiments, people with every imaginable diagnosis have reduced their pain by laughing.

The point here is not to say that laughter is a cure-all for medical conditions. But what it does tell us is that by making laughter a part of our everyday life, we can better cope with worries, stressors, and self-condemning thinking patterns that can wreak havoc on our health. Is aging reversible?

A new study says maybe it is.

Aging can be measured by more than just the candles on our birthday cake. It can also be measured through chemical changes in our DNA – what scientists call “biomarkers”. But what happens if we alter this process at a cellular level? Can we stop aging in its tracks?

In a Benjamin Button-esque feat, in a study at UCLA researchers gave 9 participants a combination of growth hormone and diabetes medication in an attempt to stop shrinking in the thymus which occurs after puberty.

The results were surprising even to researchers who found that, on average, not only did biological aging halt, but participants regained 2.5 years of biological age over the one year study. In other words, on several markers of biological age, the study participants’ results looked younger than when they started.

Although the study was small and not very controlled, this does open up the possibility of medically halting aging, at least on a biological level. New Treatment for Stroke Victims

Revolutionary medical device worms its way into the field of stroke treatment

Strokes affect 795,000 Americans each year and treating them during the “golden hour” before death or permanent disability occurs can be a challenge. Fortunately, scientists are developing a magnet-lead device to treat stroke patients less invasively. The device would “worm” its way through patients’ brains and could be used to remove clots or administer clot-busting medication without surgery.

Although doctors say that using the device on humans could be more than a decade away, it is an innovative step towards quick and efficient stroke treatment which is faster, less invasive, and could even be done remotely. Additionally, Bradley Nelson, a professor of robotics at Swiss technical university ETH Zurich, says the device could exceed the potential of surgery and reach areas catheters are not able to.

Find out when the autumn leaves will look their best in your area

The changing colors of the leaves is a trademark sign of the start of autumn, but when that happens all depends on where you live.

In certain parts of the country—we’re looking at you, central Rockies—foliage begins to change colors as early as mid-September, peaking by the end of the month. In other parts of the U.S., prime leaf-peeping takes off in October, with vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges topping out in early November. And for our country’s southernmost states, autumn colors can be seen as late as December.

With that said, shortening days, temperature changes, weather conditions, and even drought can play a huge role in determining whether the leaves will brighten early or late. Still, it’s possible to estimate when to hunt for leaves in New York City or scrounge for color in North Carolina.

Cost of Living

In what city will your paycheck stretch the furthest?

Where is the best place for you to live, based on salaries and costs of living? Is it a leading tech hub like the Bay Area or Boston, a superstar city like New York, or a less-established “rise of the rest” city like Pittsburgh? A new analysis by Jed Kolko, chief economist at the labor market and jobs site Indeed, breaks down the data, identifying the cities and metro areas where salaries stretch the furthest and workers and families have the most money left over.

To do so, he compares salary data from Indeed’s job postings to cost of living data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (as we know, differences in living costs are basically all about housing). This is what he found after analyzing all 185 United States metros with 250,000 people or more.

First off, there’s no doubt salaries are highest in big, expensive metros and leading tech hubs like the San Francisco Bay Area. On the flip side, these places also suffer from extremely expensive housing costs and mounting problems of housing unaffordability and inequality.

So, what happens when you adjust for housing and living costs? Kolko found workers thrive best in smaller metros, with the general trend being that paychecks stretch the further in smaller cities for most workers. In fact, the top 10 metros to live in all had a population below 1 million.
