How to overcome the 5 mental obstacles that stand in the way of happiness

In the new book,The Five Hurdles to Happiness, author and child psychologist Mitch Ablett sets off to describe five reactive habits of minds that were originally identified in ancient contemplative and meditative traditions. Though these habits evolved for important reasons—to keep us safe from danger, for example—many of us find them less than useful in our modern world, where they can wreak havoc on our well-being. These are those five habits (or hurdles) and how to overcome them.

Desire: craving pleasure is completely normal, but compulsive craving leads to excessive costs to our effectiveness and, in extremes, to the impairments and perils of addiction. To overcome this, stop what you’re doing for just a moment when you can tell you’re getting triggered by something in your environment.

Aversion: we get irritable and hostile when we perceive our life circumstances “shouldn’t” be as they are. It’s natural to want to “push” away from aversive situations, but this anger can spill over into other parts of life and become toxic for your well-being. One solution is to notice, with curiosity about, what is happening in your body and your mind. Witness the bodily sensations and flow of thoughts that come from aversion. Let them be born, live, and pass on their own.

Mental fatigue: a clouded, dull, sluggish state of mind that saps our concentration and ability to see others. When we’re mentally fatigued, we regularly tune out of the world, because we’re unsatisfied in some way. If you’re having trouble concentrating, allow these experiences to be just as they are, without judgment or attempts to control them. Try to recognize what’s happening in your body and mind without trying to change it.

Restlessness: our powerful human brain evolved to help us quickly and efficiently anticipate threats in our environment. Nowadays, it can also make us feel restless and anxious. To solve this, penetrate uncomfortable sensations in the body with full, deep belly breaths, and continue to breathe in this way until you notice your experience shifting and your negative thought patterns dissolving.

Doubt: uncertainty about our situation and ourselves that blocks our ability to see the way forward with flexibility. To move past doubt, prompt yourself to move or act with intention in the direction that feels most important and reflects compassionate care for others. Pause—and remember to be kind to yourself.

Youth crime rates are at their lowest level in 60 years

The United States’ youth crime rates are dropping at an astounding rate. Youth arrests dropped for the 13th year in a row, hitting their lowest level in 60 years. This trend shows an optimistic future for the criminal landscape of the next generation, as these teenagers head into adulthood. The number of juveniles arrested fell 11 percent between 2017 and 2018, while adult crime rates fell two percent.

The cause of the decrease is debated by criminologists with explanations ranging from education programs to decreased arrest incentives, but regardless of the reason, cities are embracing the trend. San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors has voted to close their juvenile detention center by 2021, because there are simply not enough offenders to keep it in operation.

It can sometimes feel like violent news is all around us, but it’s important to remember that the drop in crime rates offers a hopeful prognosis for the safety and future of our cities.

The Green Hereafter

Posted on October 11, 2019

Paris just opened a cemetery dedicated to green burials

In a 2017 study, the City of Paris discovered something rather shocking about traditional burial practices: the average burial generates, on average, 833 kilograms (or almost 1 ton) of carbon dioxide, which is nearly the equivalent of a round-trip flight between Paris and New York. Part of those emissions comes from the practice of embalming, which was only developed after the American Civil War to preserve soldiers’ bodies for their families to receive.

In response to the results of the study, Paris recently opened its first green cemetery at Ivry-sur-Seine. The cemetery will do away with gravestones, replacing them with wooden markers that the city of Paris has said it will replace every ten years. Coffins and urns must be made out of biodegradable materials, either cardboard or unvarnished local wood, and bodies must be clothed in natural biodegradable fibers.

They cannot, of course, be embalmed—marking “a return to what was done in the country for millennia”. This isn’t the only green funeral initiative going around these days. In Washington state, human composting is now allowed in which human bodies are transformed into usable soil.

Reset Your Gut For Less Stress

Posted on October 10, 2019

Follow this 1-day meal plan to lower your stress levels

Resetting your gut is an effective strategy for feeling less stressed and more energized—and the fantastic thing is that it doesn’t require all too much time to make this happen. In fact, it just takes one day. With that in mind, here is a one-day meal plan created by the people over at Greatist that will reset your gut when stress has got your tummy feeling twisted:

1: Avocados for healthy fat at breakfast. The heart-healthy fat in avocados is chock-full of B vitamins, which nix stress while balancing out neurotransmitters and, according to a 2001 study, supporting brain function. Toss some avocado atop some whole-grain toast and enjoy.

2: Yogurt to kick-start your morning: Numerous studies have shown that eating foods rich in probiotics has amazing benefits for mental health. This is thanks to the gut-brain axis, which ensures that your healthy gut bacteria, brain, and mood are in balance. Eating some plain Greek yogurt will do the trick, but you can also add it to a smoothie.

3: Blueberries for a sweet snack: These tiny superfoods are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C — great news for you, bad news for anxiety. According to one study, vitamin C and antioxidants are powerful tools for fighting the symptoms associated with anxiety and even for preventing it.

4: Spinach salad for a stress-free lunch: Popeye was onto something. This leafy green is also good for reducing anxiety. Spinach is high in magnesium and B vitamins, two contenders in the fight against stress.

5: Salmon for a dose of omega-3s at dinner: Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to reduce inflammation, decrease anxiety, and improve symptoms related to anxiety, such as increased heart rate. The fatty acids found in salmon can also regulate serotonin and dopamine levels, resulting in an overall calming and relaxing state.

6: Dark chocolate for dessert: Researchers analyzed five different kinds of chocolate and found that chocolate with 85 percent of cocoa had the highest serotonin content. The magnesium in dark chocolate can also help lower stress levels by suppressing the release of the stress hormone cortisol.

Add these 6 foods to your breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and wake up with a smile tomorrow!

Trying to maintain your weight?

Make nuts a part of your daily diet

As Americans age, they gain an extra pound of weight annually on average. One way to quell this steady rise in weight is to make nuts a part of your daily diet. According to an in-depth study out of Harvard University T.H Chan School of Public Health in Boston, adding a handful of nuts—say, 12 almonds or 10 walnut halves—can cause less weight gain to occur and can lower one’s risk of obesity.

The co-author of the study wrote that, while people who consistently ate nuts gained half a pound of weight annually, those who ate nuts only now and then gained, on average, about one pound each year. That may not sound like a big difference, but “those-half-pounds add up over time.”

Part of the reason for this is that the protein and fiber in nuts tend to fill people up, leaving them satisfied for longer and less susceptible to cravings. The very act of chewing may also act as a deterrent from eating too many nuts, because they take more work to consume than other snack foods.
